Could he live with less, on less? Sure! In fact, I'd say that every one of us does. I must admit to being curious as to what the cutoff line in square footage is before Edwards would become an acceptable advocate for the poor. 10,000? 5,000? 1,000? Should he own his own home, or would that make him an unsuitable advocate, too? Should he live in a cardboard box?
Come on, people. Saying that Edwards can't be an advocate for the poor because he lives in a way oversized house is like saying that white men can't be advocates for eliminating racism or sexism because of their privilege. It's stupid, both conceptually and practically.
Also, no one's getting elected except rich people. No, it shouldn't be that way, but it is. You have to deal with the world as it is, not as it should be. Should the reality be changed? Yes, but wealth=power is an equation that has been around as long as the human race and it's sure as hell not getting changed by the next election. The reality in America is that the Presidency is a rich people's club. Name the last middle-class person who was a viable candidate for the Presidency, much less someone poor.
There's a continuum here. At one end, you have the BFEE, whose philosophy is, "I got mine, screw you." On the other end is someone like Edwards, whose philosophy is, "I got mine, let me help you get yours." If you have to choose between rich people, at least have the sense to choose someone who is trying to help others, instead of tearing him up. Some of you wouldn't just bite the hand that feeds you; you'd gnaw it to the bone.
