Lover's husband alleges Ensign, Santorum cover-up
By Reid Wilson

The scandal surrounding Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) has ensnared another senator as Doug Hampton, the husband of the woman with whom Ensign had the affair, alleged a widespread cover-up and said he is considering legal action.

Hampton initially reached out to Fox News urging them to report the affair, but Ensign admitted the affair before news outlets made it public. In an interview that aired Thursday, Hampton accused ex-Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), a Fox News contributor, of leaking word of his letter to Ensign.

A phone call to Santorum's assistant at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and an e-mail to Santorum's personal account were not immediately answered Friday morning.

Hampton would not rule out legal action against Ensign for his actions and treatment of two employees. The former aide also said he had sought advice from others about how to approach a lawsuit.

"I think I'm considering everything," Hampton said. "We are going backwards each month, financially."

3. This Hampton guy isn't a very sympathetic character.

"We are going backwards each month, financially." It's hard to feel bad for the man, since we just learned that his family took the "help" so generously offered by Ensign's parents. Both he and Ensign should exit the public stage. Our country will be the better for it. I really don't relish the idea of a CourtTV extravaganza.

17. Hey, he shared his wife, and now has nothing to show for it.
She's even getting in on the act. I heard last night she wants Ensign to resign, too.

8. Yeah, I've heard hunger is a great motivator
I love public slap fights where neither side is particularly sympathetic. "Oooh, that's gonna leave a mark! Hey, are you just gonna sit there and take that, ya wimp? That's it! Smack him back . . . hard."

7. "Hampton initially reached out to Fox News urging them to report the affair"...
He tried to take the news to Fox? Well, there's your problem!

It's sort of adorable when Republicans actually think that Fox will report bad news about Republicans without somehow trying to lessen the impact first. If he'd taken this to Politico, or even Kos, it would have been everywhere within an hour.

10. I Have No Pity For Any Of These Losers...
Hampton, included. He could have stepped up when he first saw this thing occuring, but kept quiet, took the money and looks like he wanted even more. I sure haven't seen any reports where Hampton is gonna give the money back, just keeps crying about how Ensign's schtooping is costing him money. This is a free country...he could have quit, blew the whistle and got a real job.

Yes...there's a ton of schadenfraude here over yet another hypocrite (looks like Coburn and now Rectorum are along for the ride), but these are all adults who were responsible for their actions and looked the other way when money or power was involved.

13. Isn't it just--all about "sanctity of marriage"--
except in the "Thou shalt not commit adultery" sense. While I don't think he should have to get on board with *stoning* the guy, helping cover it up seems a bit hypocritical coming from a holier-than-thou-type.

12. Oh how I love the slimy irony,
That Sanatarioum in somehow involved is just such sweet poetic irony. I would love to find out if Ricky isn't a "Family" member himself. I wouldn't be too suprised if Doug Hampton wasn't somehow at one time involved with this little cult himself.

that Hampton was pretty much pimping his wife out. He's as bad as Ensign, in my opinion.
