McCain says he misspoke in upbeat Baghdad comments

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. Senator John McCain said in an interview to be broadcast on Sunday he misspoke in his recent upbeat comments about security in Baghdad, where he traveled under heavy military protection.

The Arizona senator, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, maintains progress has been made in the U.S.-led war in Iraq, according to comments to be aired on CBS' "60 Minutes." Excerpts were released on Friday.

McCain said he regrets comments he made after a tour of Baghdad last Sunday, when he said he could see progress and the American people were not being told the "good news" about the war, according to excerpts of his comments and a press release provided by "60 Minutes."

"Of course I am going to misspeak and I've done it on numerous occasions and I probably will do it in the future," said McCain, according to "60 Minutes."

The excerpted quotes provided by "60 Minutes" did not indicate which comments McCain thought were misspoken.

1. It's the eternal question: Are you a liar, or are you an idiot? He prefers the latter.

A Sesame Street send up featured a conversation between Big Dick (Nixon in those days; it's somebody else now) and Ervin the Grouch.

Big Dick: Today we are going to learn the difference between lying and misspeaking and between withholding evidence and protecting the presidency.

6. There's a new "defense" out there. It's all about intent.
If he didn't "intend" to lie, he can say any fucking thing he wants to.

I had an asshole use this one on me in a discussion about O'Lielly. He insisted that Bill-O didn't "intend" to lie, he was just misinformed by his staff, so what he said wasn't technically a lie. Gee, I always thought that on air folks should make sure that what they say is the truth before they say it. What do I know. I'm just a liberal idiot?

And we get creamed over the "meaning of is."

The one good thing about photo-ops is that the candidates so frequently show the world what complete asses they are.

the streets of Baghdad" he meant it was safe to walk the streets of Baghdad as long as you sweep the area with 200 soldiers and carry an entourage of 100 soldiers, helicopters, and Humvees with signs saying "Stay Back 100 feet, deadly force authorized!".

on edit, oh yeah, and you have to wear your Kevlar vest.

misunderestimate, (Please contribute to the list... if you have a favorite).

I include McCain in this administration for two reasons:
. He wants to be ready to be VP and P later..
. Nearly all the Republican Congress is in this administration because they either take orders or corridinate every p, every q.

25. McCain: It’s ‘Fun’ When I ‘Misspeak’ About Progress In Iraq
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/04/08/mccain-60-min-misspoke/

McCain also previously claimed that there are neighborhoods that you can walk around freely, claiming his heavily-armed stroll through a Baghdad market was an example. Tonight, McCain said he can “understand why they would provide me with that security.”

“Of course I’m gonna misspeak,” McCain said. “I’ve done it on numerous occasions. And I probably will in the future. I regret that when I divert attention to something that I’ve said from my message. But that’s just life. And I’m happy, frankly, with the way I operate. Otherwise it’d be a lot less fun.” Watch the segment:

60 Minutes host Scott Pelley noted that McCain had been a fierce critic of Donald Rumsfeld but seems to “give President Bush a pass.” McCain responded, “I say that he is responsible and I will continue to say that he is responsible. Should I look back in anger? Or should I look forward?”

McCain harbors no anger because he has been an early cheerleader of ill-conceived Iraq war and remains one today.
