ACLU, Americans United target council prayersCharlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 7/13/2009 7:00:00 AM
A city council in the Lone Star State is under attack for praying in the name of Jesus.
The complaint comes from two groups -- the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State -- which, in a letter to the council, noted that videos of meetings over a nine-month period indicated that every prayer except one began or ended with an invocation of the name of Jesus Christ.
"We write to inform you that sectarian prayers at city council meetings are unconstitutional," said the letter. The ACLU and Americans United urge the council to either "consider ceasing the prayers altogether" or, at least, "take steps to ensure that the prayers are nonsectarian."
Liberty Counsel founder Mat Staver explains the antagonists' tactic. "Both of these groups now are combining together to try to intimidate the San Marcos city council, saying that generic prayers are okay, possibly -- but don't dare mention Jesus Christ," he says.
Staver, who is also dean of the Liberty University Law School, goes on to say the two groups actually misrepresent the Supreme Court decision in the case called Marsh v. Chambers, which actually upheld legislative prayer.
"They say that that case upheld it only if you remove all references to Christ -- which is absolutely not true," he emphasizes.
According to the Liberty Counsel attorney, prayer has been a part of government meetings since America's founding -- and it is just as valid, and legal, today.
