Curiously, the Republican rank and file did not protest then, but now they are picketing President Obama.
President per curiam Bush and his Republican Congress borrowed trillions from the Communist Chinese. This enabled them to spend like drunken pirates on shore leave with a stolen credit card. Curiously, the Republican rank and file, who describe themselves as fiscally conservative, said nothing. Now, suddenly, fiscal restraint is important again and “tea parties” are protesting government stimulus and job creation spending. Pouring untold billions into Iraq and Wall Street (where it was promptly stolen by Bush’s cronies) is OK, but helping ordinary Americans is socialism?
Republicans should not despair now that the Democrats have 60 senators. Democratic leaders are showing that they are equally contemptuous of their constituency. Although large majorities of Democratic voters favor a single-payer national health plan and want the illegal war in Iraq stopped, both are “off the table” as our “leaders” give their corporate backers the return on their investment that they expect.
