NRA growing more alarmed over Sotomayor
NRA growing more alarmed over Sotomayor

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has questioned Sonia Sotomayor’s fitness to serve on the Supreme Court, a troubling sign for the nominee in what has so far been a smooth confirmation hearing.

The NRA is considered one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington and holds sway with Democrats from conservative states, who could side with Republicans in opposing the nominee.

Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, blasted Sotomayor for ruling that the Second Amendment’s protection of gun rights does not apply to state and local governments and for being “evasive” when asked about whether gun ownership is a fundamental right.

“As the Senate considers the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Americans are watching to see if this nominee would lend her support to those who’ve declared war on the rights of America’s 80 million gun owners,” LaPierra wrote in a statement posted on the group’s website Wednesday. “After the first day of confirmation hearings, gun owners have good reason to worry.”

2. It doesn't make sense
There will still be a dominate right wing presence on the court, so what do they have to worry about? She can't do much about gun ownership all by herself! This is just more of the plan by the right wing to derail her by trying to get dems who own guns against her, that's all it is.

3. The NRA doesn't let many opportunities for fundraising pass them by.
And that's all this is.

5. I agree with him about her being evasive.
I know thats how all judicial nominees are but I really don't have much of an idea of where she stands on separation of church and state, free speech,... even abortion rights she's been evasive about. I dont think we can just assume that she'll be good. And I don't think it was necessary to choose a nominee that we dont know where she or he stands on those issues. Theres 60 Democrats; Republicans couldn't have stopped any nominee.

I get the impression that she'll be liberal on affirmative action and issues dealing with minorities but I cant tell much beyond that.

I dont blame him for being alarmed about gun rights. Its the issue he cares about. I was alarmed about Alito and Roberts stands on issues I care about too.

8. Oh yes, all 80 million gun-owning Americans speak with Wayne LaPierre's voice
Well, as long as some hand-wringing, pearl-clutching, nervous Nellies believe that, Wayne LaPierre will never have to do an honest day's work for the rest of his miserable life.

15. What should the "gun nuts" be concerned about?
I have no love for the NRA, but why would you be happy about the possibility of limiting civil rights protected by the Constitution?
