OAK BLUFFS, Mass. -- Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. is accusing a Cambridge Police officer of lying and fabricating a police report that detailed Gates' arrest on disorderly conduct charges.

"I think he owes me an apology for what he did," Gates told NewsCenter 5's Liz Brunner in an interview Tuesday night. "He should look into his heart and know that he is not telling the truth and he should beg my forgiveness."

the whole thing stinks.

But I read an account that had a neighbor of Gates calling the police when she saw what she thought was a man trying to break into the house.

How come people don't recognize their own neighbors any more?

And why didn't the cop, when he saw Gates' ID and that he'd used a key to let himself into the back door, just tip his cap and wish Gates a nice day, remind him that the Boston police were doing their best to protect their citizens - which is what they were doing, really?

Sounds like everyone flipped out.

Damn, if I'd just flown back from China, had a bronchial infection, and then had to deal with cops, I'm pretty sure I'd behave badly, too.

I'm just not sure this has anything to do with race...............................

3. police expert described these type of arrests as "contempt of cop', cops use charge of

"loud/tumultuous' to punish folks who insult them or ask for badge/id. If Gates were less prominent he might been looking at the cops favorite charge of "resisting arrest' also.

gates as well. cop is already on record with the report. Then the liar is guilty of a criminal charge.

I doubt anyone is going to do any begging. Even for rich / important people.
