2. If the house is properly insulated and designed to use energy efficiently,

e.g. 'smart heating and cooling' to detect when people enter or leave a room, set timers, and so on... why not?

Trouble is, they were all cheaply built. When I see a Mcmansion whose roof IS covered with snow, I clap and applaud. They have insulation. No doubt Bill Gates had that feature installed with all the others and I'd applaud him for it too.

I know a mcMansion looks prettier to not have a roof with a coating of white on it, but it's a sign of sheer, illogical waste.

5. The ones that I don't like

Are the ones built in a subdivision on lots that are not much bigger than the house and mostly look alike. I live in a lower cost of living area so most of these houses are in the $300,000 to $400,000 range. There is still inexpensive land for sale as well as big unique houses that are that price or cheaper. I don't really understand why people buy them around here. I suppose that is what they like.
