WASHINGTON -- A homeless man is behind bars, days after helping to rescue a Washington, D.C., man who fell off a boat.
When William Slaughter slipped into the icy water Monday night, Wayne Hall and two other homeless men answered his calls for help. One of the men grabbed Slaughter and kept him from going under while Hall and the other man fetched police.
But when Hall went to the city's Harbor Patrol office seeking recognition for his good deed, he got recognition of a different kind.
Even though he gave a fake name, officers recognized him as a man who was mistakenly released from jail after he was arrested for driving a stolen car in December.
Hall is now back in jail serving a 20-month sentence.
Slaughter said he hopes the criminal justice system looks favorably on Hall's effort to save his life.
