When I finished training in the Climate Project with Al Gore, just
3 months ago, I would never have believed we could come so
far, so fast. But this week is a watershed moment in the
debate.
The same day that Newt Gingrich accepted our framing of the
Climate issue, (in debate with John Kerry- the question was not
whether its happening, but who can best deal with it)
Arnold Schwarzennegger is on the cover of Newsweek holding
up planet earth and arguing for "green republicanism" - touting,
deservedly, California's new climate law.
The Climate change battle has been sort of an Al Gore-led
Blitzkrieg, with the Climate Change meme sweeping over the
high level decision makers, both public and private, around the
country, and the planet. The high ground has been taken, there remain pockets
of resistance among those who have not gotten the message, but
they've been thoroughly flanked.
Their will continue to be deniers even as the poles melt, just like
there are still people who support the South in the "War of Northern
Aggression" - but they are marginalized.
The primary task that remains is to educate the mass of people
about what is happening, and what the solutions are.
Among the most important battles will be to keep US utilities from
building the 150 or so coal plants that are on the drawing
boards.
http://ran.org/new/dirty_money/home/no_new_coal/By beginning our own process of shedding fossil fuel
projects, we will bring the developing world into the
process. Our message should be:
"We recognize the right of developing countries to
continue to fund, develop, and perfect 19th century
technologies. For ourselves, we have decided to develop
technology for the 21st century, and beyond.
When they are ready to buy them from us, we
will be happy to sell them."
