Fred Thompson Says He Has Cancer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Fred Thompson, the potential presidential candidate better known as television's gruff "Law & Order" district attorney, said Wednesday he was diagnosed with lymphoma more than two years ago but the cancer shouldn't affect his life expectancy.

In an interview with Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto, the former Tennessee senator, 64, said a doctor conducting a physical in 2004 found a bump on his neck, which turned out to be non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He said the disease is in remission with no illness or symptoms, and it won't affect his decision about whether to seek the Republican nomination.

"I wouldn't be doing this if I wasn't satisfied

1. If I was him I'd get the best doctor available - Dr. Bil Frist!
Have Fred send Bill a tape and Bill can diagnose him. And recommend whether or not to stay home and die.

3. Excuse me "had" cancer not "has"
Yes, I know, TECHNICALLY one is never "cured" of cancer, but since his is not currently active IMHO your title is misleading.

5. actually, there are some types of NHL where they do declare you cured.
But Thompson apparently isn't there yet or doesn't have that type. There are a lot of flavors of NHL.

6. It was the AP headline.
Cancer in remission is still cancer.

15. Yup. My uncle's leukemia was in remission for thirty years.
Then it came back and killed him.

8. It was reported as "a treatable form of Lymphoma." That would be 3 repuke candidates
fighting cancer. McCain, Guiliani and if he runs, Thompson. That has to have an impact on votes, I would think.

12. McCain and Giuliani had different types of cancer--more curable
if caught early and excised. I think they are considered cured.

32. I'm not so sure about that.
Fred Thompson will be hard to beat.

I'm sorry folks here don't see that, but I live right in the heart of all the excitement brewing about him. It's all I hear on the radio.

Leastwise, Fred will pull a lot of those white male swing voters from the South and mid-West away from whatever candidate we put up and that will HURT. We need those people.

I've got serious ideological problems with the guy, but he generally strikes me as at least the most honest of the Republicans likely to be nominated. (how's that for damning with faint praise?)

Sucks to be afflicted, but obviously he's been aware of this for some time and felt he needed to be upfront.

Which, I guess, means the real news is, he's probably pretty serious about running.

19. Honest? You've got to be kidding. He is as fake as a 3-dollar bill.
He is an ACTOR. And right beside Dick Cheney in terms of policy views--in fact, he was a chief fund-raiser for the Scooter Libby defense fund. Wow, y'all need to educate yourself before you become deluded by celebrity. I'm sure that's why the GOPers were hoping he'd run.

21. There's nothing inherently dishonest about raising money for Libby.
Yes, I was aware of that, and I'll stand by my exceedingly faint praise.

I didn't say he was "honest," but merely acknowledging that he least amount of political baggage of the sorry-ass lot running on the Gooper side. I think he'd actually be kinda tough to beat, based on what I do know of him.

24. No, what's dishonest is using a TV image to fool people into thinking
you're not a rabid neocon, which he is--that is why the GOPers thought he might be a secret weapon for them. Apparently, it's working, at least here on DU. He's got plenty of political baggage, including being a lobbyist for the Savings and Loan industry when that whole debacle was going down. He is also a member of AEI, the friendly folks who brought you Iraq. He also said he thought that much of his Senate work was not relevant, and apparently boring. Nothing about this guy qualifies him for higher office, and I aim to get the word out.

I'd hope our candidate is greeted with flowers and chocolates.

oh, wait. Let me try that again...

Seriously, I'm aware of everything you'd mentioned (save for the S&L involvement--juicy!) and I'm fine with exposing any extremists out there.

Not the thread itself -- obviously, everyone wishes him the best for his health -- but amid the thread there are all
manner of posts from people weirdly enamored of Thompson (especially if they're progressives).

33. We're not enamoured, melody - we just know what we see
all around us and are trying to warn you guys of the impending thud.

I don't know how you get "enamoured" out of "scared to death he'll suck all the wind out of everyone's campaign," which is more accurate.

He may not seem like much to those of you who live in blue bubbles, but to those of us in red and purple states, he's crippling. We're afraid of never gaining any purple or red states for the Democrats with him on the Republican ticket.

35. Are you TnDem? Because he says the exact same things--the "Blue Bubble"
and all of that. I don't know, when I go out in my red-state town, I don't see anyone putting up Fred-Shrines. Or polishing Fred-Busts. Or waving Fred-Flags. I haven't met anyone who seems to know or even care about him, frankly, and I work in a very guy-oriented blue-collar job. I have no doubt that Republicans might like him better than Roody, but...so?

17. Two very good friends of mine died of that disease.
Very sad. They were very young, very bright and beautiful ladies and they were sisters. The first of the two sisters died at age 18. Her older sister died about five years later at the age of 26 and left two little boys and a husband behind to grieve. Both young ladies lived about three years after being diagnosed with lymphoma. They were very close friends of my wife and I and I still get very sad after all these years thinking about them being taken away from our circle of friends at such a young age.

I went to another very good friend's funeral just the other day who died of liver cancer at the age of 56. Cancer is a horrible thing.

25. Screw this old bastard. He better not think about running for
the presidency. He's not fit physically.

It's not like his wife is ill now, is it? I mean, considering the shitstorm that hit after Edward's wife announced that she's ill again. And she's not even running for office.

ok to run for pres as a young and healthy man when MARRIED to someone with cancer.
