Congratulations GOP! You Created Your Frankenstein Following & Now You Can't Control Them.
The fringe, paranoid American groups that GOP political operative began piecing together several decades ago by pulling together religious fanatics, end-timers, gun nuts, militias, racists, homophobes and xenophobes has amalgamated into the sick cultural monster that now controls the Republican National Party.

Frankenstein's crazed creation is now a threat not only to its master, but to the entire American and global village.

Congratulations, Republicans! You are quite a fucking spectacle to behold in 2009. Your monster has taken over your castle and will not give it back to you. Ever. You lost control of your party.

Can anyone imagine the meltdown freakshow that the GOP 2012 Convention will be?

What a group of freaks the GOP now permanently has become. Paranoid freaks.

1. The only people left in the party *are* that fringe. It's a big fringe.

3. You assume the GOP wants to control them
No, the GOP is quite content to sit back and watch while their little sycophants wreck all sorts of mayhem. They want things to spiral out of control, so that they can swoop in in 2012 and promise to restore "order".

5. Respectfully, they've lost all control.
Newsweek's Senior Editor, Howard Fineman, said it this sort of this way: The GOP river is at such a low in popularity that the public can now see the contents of the river bed and it's an ugly site.

The GOP is spiraling into perhaps a generation of being out of power. And they have no one that can put these mixed eggs back together again.

A Bully with a stick starts beating people then he asks to be put in power to stop the beatings?

That is not new, it is the frame of mind of a authoritarian.

10. The Mafia has been doing exactly this for years
They let their goons loose on a community, then move in and offer "protection" from those goons.

Same thing that's happening here.

16. I believe that is an oversimplification of the mafia days.

The mafia never asked to be voted into office. They muscled, beat and murdered their way into power.

The GOP can try that tactic, but it will be their end. If the GOP tries that then it will be game over for them.

18. They'll blame the Democrats for it.
They'll say "look at how Obama tore the country apart". They'll put forth a very friendly face - no McCain, Cheney, Bush, etc - and promise to bring "civility" back to Washington.

I'm not saying that anybody will fall for it - I sure as hell hope not. But I do believe that's what they'll run on.

they'll say dems are failures so elect us to get the job done, just ignore the fact that we're the reason the dems couldn't accomplish anything. Then the just need enough support to make the stealing of the election plausable enough for the msm to look the other way again to install their candidates.

They don't care what harm they do in the this process. If they can't rule American, no one can have her.

40. All they need is for the corpse media to present that as possibly plausible.
They don't need to win the actual vote, they just need their "win" to seem semi-plausible.

They will never find anyone who can satisfy this craven crowd of misfits. And as ugly and loud as they are, they are a minority in America and I see the "dust of history" for this crowd. They are out of power and are politically and financially castrated.

It's the death rattle.

As you said, "they will either reform or be left behind". I like the "left behind" because it fits perfectly with their paranoid eschatology.

27. There is a push to go further right from those groups
They might not be the majority of self-identified Republicans but they are a sizable group and the loudest right now. And they're driving the GOP into a party of the extreme right. The GOP was happy to have those groups on board but now they're taking control and the party bosses don't know what to do. They can't afford to lose those extreme right groups but in appeasing them, they're turning off the moderates in their party and independents.

Election math is simple: you cannot rely on only the "base" to get you elected. You need to win the "middle" as well. Bush, while far-right in some ways, was moderate in others. And that is how he got the "middle" to vote for him initially in 2000. But what have been the excuses that those loud far right groups have given for Bush's failures in the 2nd term*? He wasn't conservative enough and was... (gasp!) liberal! What are those groups' excuse for why the GOP lost the Congress in 2006? The candidates weren't conservative enough. Why McCain lost in 2008? Not conservative enough. See a pattern here?

Now we hear similar things from our side too: President Obama, "Blue Dogs", etc are not liberal enough, etc. But fortunately for us, we do not have the type of infrastructure that the Republicans spent building for the last 25 years: the talk shows, publications, think tanks, Fox News, etc that were used to bring the extreme groups together are now the driving force in the GOP. The left doesn't have such an embedded infrastructure to beat the drums that keep the people in line.

Don't get me wrong: pressing our candidates and elected officials to a more progressive position is never a bad thing. But let's be serious here... the Dennis Kuciniches (while fine progressives) are not electable in national office (President) nor state-wide either (Senator, Governor) because they cannot win over the middle. And while Dennis enters the nomination race, I don't think he expects to win (and I really think his supporters don't either) but instead are there to lend a very progressive voice to the debate and keep the other candidates honest. On the other hand, Ron Paul (and his supporters) were in it to win and expected that they would (or at least could).

* Yes, the first term wasn't any better but it the administration was able to more or less keep the illusion together and not reveal the little man behind the curtain pulling all the strings.

21. No doubt, but that was before the full effects of a completely failed economy took hold
Don't get me wrong, I hope they fail again and are truly regulated to the minority party permanently but I have already witnessed the chimp get in on the heels of a VERY successful democratic administration and therefore I take nothing for granted.

As more people continue to feel the pain of a failed economy, when benefits start running out for the millions impacted since 2008, which will start happening late this year, all hell is gonna break lose and people will be calling for a plain spoken, STRONG leader of the 'people' and the reTHUGs know that script by HEART.

If Obama's team can't turn this thing around by 2012 all the rules will go out the window and I truly tremble for our country.

29. If the repubs get back in power one more time, the damage they wreak will be incalculable.
I've gone on record as saying that if Dick Cheney hasn't been investigated for war crimes by 2012, I don't care what kind of batshit crazy candidate the repubs put up, I'll stay home in 2012. But after this past week, I take it back. I will vote in 2012 & I will vote dem. I'm tired of voting for the lesser of two evils, but damn, these people are dangerous.

Those who think the GOP is near dead or dead, are fooling themselves. There are lots of angry people in this country & if the economy is not significantly better by 2012 - & I mean JOBS, not the DJIA - it won't matter that Bush got us here, the democratic party will pay the price. We seem to always give the republicans more time to fuck things up, than we give the democrats time to fix it.

30. Yes, unfortunately I agree. The Dem's really need to stay on top of their game
As the reTHUGs will be pulling out all the stops, as we are witnessing, though with the proper application of political jujitsu they definitely can be beat back but we must always keep our guard up and stay on the offensive.

For example, even though many don't watch the WH press briefings it is a great opportunity to put out and control our message and spin the reTHUGs but the current spokesman comes off as being way too hesitant, almost as if he is distracted, at least he came off that way yesterday. we need our talking points down pat, delivered with confidence and a smile, like a pro level pitchman, since the M$M deals only with sound bytes and not elaborate, ponderous and lengthly explanations.

13. what makes you think they want their "fringe" to do anything other than what they are doing?
the republicans have long profited from trotting out their coulters and other outrageous fringe acts and then having their senior elected leaders act like the voice of reason by contrast while proposing nearly the same policies (just without the overt odiousness).

and while their role nowadays is more disruptive than constructive (in terms of government action, that is), their tactics are essentially the same and the results remain profitable to them. do you really think they are unhappy with the way they have advanced their interests in the health care issue? the insurance lobby certainly is pleased with how things are going.

All that and in retaliation for a "terrorist" attack that conveniently benefits every corporation with ties to Dick (big on the dick) Cheney! after 8 years of that these wing nuts are driving the public away with conspiracy theories and blatant hate speech.

It will come and it will be ugly. They have ginned their nasty crowd up to such a point that there is no where for the energy to go but up into some type of explosion. These people think they have power and they are sated with that thought. And why shouldn't they be. No one of any standing, not their party, secret service, law enforcement or even the WH has exerted any real pressure for them to stop. Instead we're told that a guy with a loaded gun in NH has a 1st amendment right to do so. Bullies never back down until they are punished in some way, so this will escalate while the gophers stand on the sideline snickering. Then the Ka-Boom will come and they'll be sorry. But it will be too late for them and their party but hopefully the rest of the country will be shocked back into sanity.
