Victory in Afghanistan Similar to Pornography: Holbrooke
Source: TopNews.in

Washington, Aug. 13 : While US troops involved in an intense battle against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, President Obama's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, has compared success in Afghanistan to pornography.

Addressing a panel at the St. Regis Hotel, Holbrooke was asked about his views over how he sees victory in Afghanistan, and the continuation of drone strikes against Al-Qaeda and other outlawed outfits in the region, The Washington Independent reports.

Holbrooke replied: "The U. S. had to be `clear about what our national interests are' ultimately, success would require taking a `Supreme Court test', we''ll know it when we see it."

Holbrooke's statement was quite similar to what Justice Potter Stewart had once said while explaining pornography.

1. Ridiculous, misleading subject line
That would only make sense if the phrase, "we'll know it when we see it" was ONLY used to describe pornography.

3. The end result is the same, though. War without end.
It isn't over till we say it's over. How to define it? When we say it's over.

What's a win?

You'll know when we tell you.

2. Completely moronic journalism. This writer should be thrown to the wolves.
He did not compare it to porn. He did not even mention porn. What a dumb story.

4. How would you interpret 'the Supreme Court test'?

What do you think Holbrooke was referencing?

5. "I know it when I see it" is from a porn case, yes, but applies to anything and doesn't justify
saying he compared the war in Afghanistan to porn, nor does it justify your misplaced outrage.

6. My outrage is not misplaced.
Thanks, though. Afghanistan is a war without a win. An ill-defined objective that will cost more than Iraq. War profiteers are doing just as well there, as we lose more soldiers and kill more civilians. ANd, Holbrooke is saying(regardless of whether he had porn in mind)it will go on until some ambiguous moment--years from now--when the US decides arbitrarily it is over. It is bullshit.

8. I agree it's bullshit.
It's also bullshit to say that Holbrooke said victory in Afghanistan is similar to pornography.

11. The Supreme Court porn case also used the words, "a" and "the"
That does not mean every time you see someone use "a" or "the" they are talking about porn.

13. I knew what the similarity was going to be before I clicked the link..
Pretty obvious simile.

Since it doesn't seem possible to agree on what "victory" will look like then the only other way to know what it might be is "I know it when I see it."

15. "Obscenity"

"Obscenity," not pornography, was the subject of the famous Potter Stewart quote. Dumb comment by Holbrooke on many levels.
