Overweight Lady in Pink: Your STUPIDITY could kill you

Looking past the obvious repulsive Obama/ Hitler comparison, I'd like to point out a few interesting FACTS to this woman in the pink shirt. Let me begin by saying that I don't mean to pick on people who are overweight, it's simply that this picture presents an obvious case of someone the for-profit insurance industry will discriminate against if given the chance.

If she lost her job and her employer-funded group health insurance plan, she would be hard-pressed to find an insurance company willing to sell her an individual policy due to her weight alone.

If she lied about her weight on her application and then developed a serious illness, the company could retroactively RESCIND her health insurance.

If she did find a company willing to insure her despite her weight (for a higher premium) and then she developed a condition which could be caused by being overweight (heart disease, diabetes, etc.) the company could refuse to pay for treatment by claiming it was a preexisting condition.

And even if she remains employed and her employer continues to pay for her health insurance she needs to look at the trend of employers working in collusion with the insurance industry to charge workers who smoke or who are overweight higher premiums.

It's all about PROFITS and people who have health problems are NOT profitable to insurance companies. The trend is growing for companies to do more to block access to health care to the very people who need it the most.

Several years ago my overweight sister-in-law was unable to get health insurance due to her weight. She wasn't anywhere near as large as this woman. After months of looking she found some catastropic care insurance that costed a fortune, much more than any person with a modest income could possible afford.

In the meantime, we're currently in the market for insurance as well. My husband and I both have preexisting conditions, so the weight's the least of it. We won't make it through underwriting.

The least of the problems of the woman in the pink blouse is her weight. Interestingly enough, it's the first one those here can't wait to focus on.

I did not mean this post as a cue to make fat jokes. I meant it to point out the lack of understanding of people protesting health care reform. Unfortunateluy, you can't tell from a photo most other preexisting conditions which would disqualify someone from buying private insurance.

I am also in the preexisting condition situation. My insurance is a guaranteed issue policy that costs more than the rest of the family's combined. It is killing us financially.

I am so sorry to read this. THIS is the story that just doesn't seem to be getting to the President's desk, either -- those who can get insurance can't afford it, because the premiums keep going up and up, the coverage is shrinking, and people are making decisions about what they're going to have to do without just to have coverage.

I guess the thing I'd love to ask some of the protesters -- where's your coverage from? Work? Do you realize it could vanish at any time, and you wouldn't make it through underwriting (or be able to afford COBRA)? I do have to laugh at those who are screaming bloody murder about this, but are then shown to have Medicare/Medicaid... :eyes:

47. I think the point is that if that woman lost her insurance she would have a hard time

finding new insurance at her weight. I say this as a woman who is the same size as her. If I couldn't buy into the public system in Mass I would be in big trouble finding someone to cover me. That woman would likely end up uninsured or on her state medical plan. Her ignorance is astounding. I do agree the comments about fat people on this site do hurt to read sometimes (i've lurked for a while).

40. I've noticed that some of the most outspoken

male critics at the town hall meetings are older men with huge beer bellies, baseball caps, and dressed like total slobs. It is probably one of the few times they put down that beer, turned off the TV, and got off the lazy-boy. They are like clones of each other.

I've known so many people like this. The only part of their body that every gets any exercise is their mouth. At the neighborhood bar, they are very loud and have an opinion about everything, particularly when it comes to politics and sports. They don't read, they don't listen, and they're generally lousy tippers. They'll also be the first to complain when they lose their jobs and health care insurance. THEN they'll berate the government for not doing anything!
