SALT LAKE CITY – A southern Utah newspaper has rejected a California gay couple's wedding announcement, saying its policy is to publish announcements only for marriages legal under state law.
Tyler Barrick and Spencer Young say The Spectrum in St. George initially accepted their paid wedding announcement last week, then changed course. The couple was legally married June 17, 2008, in San Francisco. They wanted the announcement printed in Young's hometown paper.
In an e-mail exchange provided by the couple, Young tells publisher Donnie Welch the marriage deserves equal treatment.
In response, Welch cites the paper's policy of only promoting marriages that are valid in Utah.
