STATE FARM PULLS GLENN BECK SUPPORT!!!!

Thu Aug 13, 2009 at 09:06:19 AM PDT
WARNING: SHORT DIARY!!!!

Just got a note from State Farm, slightly more strongly worded that the one posted here yesterday.

Looks like they are aware of it, and ACTING!

JammerML's diary :: :: Dear ****,

Thank you for your recent e-mail concerning State Farm’s advertising on the Fox network.

We have a policy of not advertising on political or opinion programming. These ads were mistakenly aired, we have corrected this issue and have taken steps to make sure it does not happen again.

Understanding our millions of customers and thousands of associates hold a full spectrum of views on political issues, State Farm has a long-standing practice of not advertising in political discussion programming regardless of a program’s political point of view.

Because of the recent situation, State Farm is now evaluating its commercial placement practices to ensure its political issues advertising guidelines are maintained.

Thank you for your e-mail and your continued support of State Farm Insurance, both are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

********

Executive Customer Service Supervisor

State Farm Insurance

Emphasis is mine.

State Farm is doing the right thing, and taking a neutral stance, I have also contacted Apple as an evangelist/developer for that company, with similar complaints. I'll let you know if I hear back from them.

3. Strange -- all of these advertisers are using the same rationale
Geico also said it was a "mistake" as part of a block purchase of time.

8. In politics, as in life, it's prudent to allow others to safe face when pushing for progress.

10. I'm not an expert in the field, but I think these blocks are brokered
So the ad guy at Company A simply buys a block of time in a particular target demo from B. A really has no knowledge exactly where those ads will show up.

17. this is common in media buying -- you buy for example, $100K worth of time on
a network, or even a family of stations. If you pay premium, and your media buyer stays involved, then you know where your ads go and you have a rationale for it.

Mostly, though -- especially when there's less money to go around -- media buyers or their clients opt for packages where they don't know where the ad plays on the network or family of cable stations. Your contract might specify 10 spins throughout the day with no premium placement -- filling space.

4. Yea! State Farm is my carrier.
I have homeowners, liability, auto all with State Farm. I'll send my agent an email and let him know I approve.

But it does beg the question, exactly how is an entire advertising campaign "mistakenly aired"?

14. Yeah but there is a ripple effect
Ad revenue is the life blood of broadcasting. Right now one personality on Fox is poison and is forcing the the "re-arranging" of ad placement. That is probably because those blocks of time are likely already contracted and paid for. Fox News the network won't really start to feel the pinch until it is time to renegotiate and renew those contracts and the advertisers say, no thanks.

The other thing is that new advertisers who might have been willing to buy time on Fox last week, will be reluctant now.

This won't kill Fox News, but they are certainly going to feel it.

20. Although it's great they pulled back from Beck
did anyone notice this little sentence?
We have a policy of not advertising on political or opinion programming.

I don't think they are clear about just how Fox reports the "news". I have yet to see them strictly report news without injecting a little bit of politics or opinion into the same. State Farm should detemine whether they want to keep stating that or drop out of advertising on the Fox Network at all.
