Kittens survive truck crushing, days without food or water
WASILLA -- Two tiny kittens owe their lives to a rescue by a couple of seasoned junkyard "dogs."

The pair are a little smudged but otherwise unharmed after the nest of shredded paper their mother made for them under a pickup seat was smashed by a car crusher over the weekend.

Gary Jacobsen, 10-year owner of Alaska Car Crushing on Vine Road west of Wasilla, said the kittens were a pretty lucky pair. They've been named Crush and Smash as a reminder of their ordeal.

"It's unbelievable they're alive. They were the luckiest cats in the world the other day," Jacobsen said.

------

On Monday, Aug. 3, Jacobsen's brother Jeff Pruitt heard a "mew" while standing beside the loaded vehicles. Thinking it might be a toy, the men listened for another sound for more than 10 minutes. Amid all the engine noise from running machinery at the business, the "mew" was inaudible. Jacobsen said they turned all the equipment off, then heard the sound again.

Workers at the plant spent about an hour unloading the vehicles stacked on top of the truck and ripping the roof off. After a lot of prying -- and a little ribbing -- they found the kittens' nest under the seat.

1. Those kitties will probably have long and pampered lives now
Every junkyard worker I ever met (and I met a lot trying to keep third world type cars running) was pure mush under that crusty exterior.

9. There is nothing sexier than a soft-hearted man who will save a kitten
Kudos to those guys! Heroes in my book! :applause:

We once had to cut a hole in the wall of the house to rescue a kitten whose mom had brought the litter up into the attic/crawlspace - he'd wandered too far and fell down between the studs in the wall. Luckily he got hung up and didn't plummet all the way down (!) but instead was stuck in the wall of my bil's bedroom on the second floor.

Same type of thing - he heard the poor little thing mewing. :( So he and my husband butchered the wall and got him out safely. :)

11. Unfortunately, each cat now only has 6 lives.
I'm not called FatDave for nothing. I'm around 320 pounds.

Few years back I stepped on a kitten I didn't see sleeping on the basement steps, with shoes, full weight. I freaked out because I thought I'd killed it. When I left it was twitching on the steps. Made my wife go check, because I couldn't stand to see it dead. And I was sure it was dead.

By the time she got to it, it was shaking it off. Within an hour it was like nothing had happened. Still have the cat.
