Georgia Republican hints Democrats Could Declare MARTIAL LAW
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 02:40 PM by Segami
Source: The Raw Story

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) has said a few outrageous things in his political career, but this one may take the cake.

Speaking to constituents at North Georgia Technical College, he lambasted proposed health care reforms as “a stinking, rotten fish” and claimed that the elderly would no longer receive medical care were it to pass.

Then he went for the kill.

“He <...> spoke of a ’socialistic elite’ - Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid - who might use a pandemic disease or natural disaster as an excuse to declare martial law,” reports The Athens Banner-Herald.

He added, “They’re trying to develop an environment where they can take over. We’ve seen that historically.”

For his part, Rep. Broun has not shied away from using fear tactics in support of the Republican party line.

In November, the Georgia lawmaker told a Rotary Club that President Obama was a “Marxist” and said his suggestion of a “civilian security force” made him eerily like Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

He later seemed to apologize for the remarks.

“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” Broun told an Associated Press reporter. “I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may—may not, I hope not—but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism.”

The AP noted at the time, “The Obama transition team declined to comment on Broun’s remarks. But spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama was referring <...> to a proposal for a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure—an idea endorsed by the Bush administration.” Obama’s logic being, building cities and neighborhoods generates more security than dropping bombs.

At the college yesterday, Broun played off fears of an alleged government-run “death panel” that would determine who is worthy of medical care, saying, “Eventually, mama will be lying in bed until she gets pneumonia and dies.”

President Obama has repeatedly dismissed similar assertions as patently false.

Broun neglected to add that private insurers already have panels that “ration” policies and decide which of their paying customers will be denied medical care.

The Republican lawmaker went on to cite claims made by the Lewin Group—which is owned by UnitedHealth Group, one of America’s largest insurers—alleging that over 115 million Americans would be forced into health care exchanges because small businesses would not be able to afford their policies any longer.

However, most small businesses have moved away from providing health insurance to their employees for years, as the cost of such insurance has skyrocketed.

In 2008 alone, employer premiums increased by five percent—twice the rate of inflation, according to the National Coalition on Health Care. At current rates of inflation, health care spending is expected to absorb at least 20 percent of America’s annual gross domestic product by 2017.

“Where do people get these ideas? Even more importantly, why do they use them?” asked blogger Glenn Church at Foolocracy. “Are Broun and his allies’ ideology so barren and weak that they can only harbor support by suggesting that the President wants to overthrow the American political system?”

The United States has roughly 46 million uninsured citizens whose only access to health care is an emergency room.

8. They are void of presenting an honest health care plan in these discussions so they resort back to
same ol' fear mongering tactics.

Just from the headline, I knew it was Paul Brounshirt. It's not just a few outrageous things, it's every time he speaks in public.

4. It's a fact, they could call for Martial Law at any time.
That is why it is so important not to allow elections to be stolen and *hit heads to be installed as president and vice president. They were in much more danger with Shooter in control...they just don't know it!

5. More projection from the pukes
Pukes always accuse others of the very behavior that pukes are currently engaged in.

Don't know if it's always deliberate...

14. Thats a tired old tactic they keep rolling out at every turn and has worn out its shine.
Today I give people more credit for their ability to sift through their 24/7 compounded lies, distortions and hatred. The Internet has helped promote these viewpoints & opinions regardless what their politcal colors and stripes may be.

42. Eh.
The problem is that many dems said the same thing about *. The big difference is that they weren't elected officials speaking in public, but posters to web sites and in e-mails. More than a couple were--and still are--DUers. You registered in 2003, so you must have seen some of that particular flavor of drivel.

Of course, only repubs "project". Or maybe people project far less than suspected.

There were far fewer people, IIRC, saying that Clinton was going to declare martial law, but then again, the world of online posters was much smaller then. I wasn't plugged in enough to say if people claimed Bush I or Reagan were going to declare martial law.

The conclusion I take away from the last 7 months and 30 years is fairly simple: Something that's inflammatory and yet commonly enough said just under the surface during one party's rule will be uttered when the next party takes office, but still be considered vaguely fringe; something's that vaguely fringe during one party's rule will become an admissible part of the discourse during the next party's rule. Sort of a spiral of defining deviance down, a spiral of increasing invective. Not a good trend, even though it's been going on as long as I can remember (although, I must admit, I'm only 50).

7. These are all of the lies that repubs had ready to use
when shrub was in office, to take over if the country revolted against them. Its utter hypocrisy, because these are the excuses that would have been used (and were planned to be used) by the bush admin.

9. Case of Repubs accusing Dems of what they would do. They are doing this
with a variety of issues right now. Total Rove. The purpose of this is to deflect from themselves even though they were most likely to do such things, put fear into people from doing this, then turn around and when they get into power to ACTUALLY do it since they will have created the environment to do so.
You are warned, my peeps!

18. Um....then why didn't they do it?
Every week during the Bush years there were threads about how they were going to round us up and put us in camps.
People even posted documents and pictures of the alleged camps.

I say, let them be stupid. Hell, just lock all the WalMarts from the outside on a Saturday and you've hemmed in most
of the conservatives, anyway.

37. Difference now is that the Right is the actual "Fringe" and they are hoppin mad
because they came so close to having it all, all the time. It still is a bit that way. But going to the heart of the monster is "health Care, Insurance Companies, Big Pharma, The Religious wing nut causes, Oil & Banks/Markets" all of which, if they are restructured, will leave the Repubs without an anchor, boat, sails or oars. They will sink. I mean sink big time. They are mad. Do not kid yourself. The powers that be are mad as hell. That is why they have called out the nut-jobs. That is why they are all guns ablazing right now and willing to cause such chaos that the Country will crash. They are very upset.
Do you really believe that they haven't learned something from what is going on right now? They will fight to the death.

They are coming out with both barrels. Maybe they should have made them stay until the healthcare bill was finished before they let them go home and rile.

I've never seen anything like it.

23. I don't know about others but for me, their message is coming in loud and clear.
There still exists an ugly strain of haters throughout that watched their worst nightmare become reality on November 2008 when Obama was elected the 44th President and Commander and Chief of this nation. Some within these groups will never accept a black man as their leader.

39. Ironic considering how close Bush effectively was to martial law
Seriously, how can these delusional bigots not see the truth here?

Bush was one vote on the supreme court away from getting the power to jail any one he wanted to forever for no reason once so ever other then declaring them an 'enemy combatant' with no proof that they intended to do harm to America or anyone.

And yet now it's Obama who wants to declare martial law they have the nerve to claim, and after all of Bush's judges have suddenly flip flopped on all of Bush's arguments for jailing anyone he wants forever with no evidence because of them being a 'threat' to national security in the president's eyes.
