Poll question: If a health insurance public option becomes a reality, will you sign up for it?
I certainly will - right now I pay Blue Shield $507 every 3 months for coverage so skimpy it hardly seems like coverage at all. Really only protects me against a catastrophic illness or if I was in an accident or something. I would drop it in a minute if there was a viable public option available. What about you?

1. Well, I would...
But I'm already on Medicare.

But believe you me, if I hadn't got that, I'd sure as hell sign up for anything with a public option.

2. This more for my kids than me. That never seems to get mentioned though.
This is as much for future generations as it is for the current generation.

18. My Mom has it,
She is covered by Tricare For Life, but she also has SCAN as a Medicare Advantage program. I'm wondering if she should just drop that and save the money she pays each month for Medicare. Someone told me "don't" though.

7. I've been uninsured since November
First time in my adult life (which is longer than I care to admit). I would sign up for the public option and I suspect I would have signed up for it even when I had health insurance through employers. I hated the private insurance companies with their endless delays in paying claims and preauthorizing procedures...

10. I have a basic 80/20 plan but it costs me $400 per month. I'd have to see

what the public option looks like, coverage-wise and money-wise. And I'd have to see if the competition causes Blue Cross Blue Shield to adjust its blackmail-ish monthly premium.

14. Have insurance thru employer now, but still spending about $20K/year out of pocket.
And that's without any major medical issues. My heart goes out to the folks who are not as fortunate as our family. I know a number of families with children who are cancer patients and who are regularly holding fundraisers to help pay the costs of their care.

This has got to stop.

23. Not sure $ amount, but some portion of premium for employee only.
We pay premiums for other family members. It's a small company with older average age employees, a few of whom are cancer survivors. I don't think they have much leverage when negotiating rates, but they do the best they can and treat employees very well, so I can't complain. As I said earlier, I consider myself fortunate compared to many others who are being denied access to health care.

20K includes copays, meds (plan pays for generic only, we must pay for name brand), deductibles, etc. (rereading my post, I don't think I made it clear that amount was total health care expenditures, not just insurance, but insurance premiums eat up about half of that).

so I don't know what to tell you.

22. The insurance is what has kept me at a job I hate so ... yeah, I'm in...
and out of my stupid-assed job if it passes. I hadn't even really made the connection. I was fighting for a public option in the health care reform bill and then somebody posted something about how they felt it would stimulate people to be able to start their own businesses and I realized that even though I have health care and I thought this whole thing was just for other people, it would really help me, and people in similar circumstances, too!
