For Sen. Kennedy, I'm getting right back to Work. If The Dems go the Reconciliation route
They need 6 Senators who are now Maybes on the Public Option. From yesterday: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6386255

The Dems now have 44 Senators who have confirmed they will support a Public option. There are 14 more who have said "maybe". I've categorized these as follows:

Up for Re-Election in 2010
AR - Lincoln (2010) (safe-to-likely)
IN - Bayh (2010) (safe)
OR - Wyden (2010) (safe)

I've noted the strength of their position for re-election. Lincoln is the weakest. There's one good way to get these guys to vote for a Public Option and the DNC has all the power it needs to pressure them. If done right, these Senators can be convinced to support a Public Option.

Most likely to support a Public Option
VA - Warner
MT - Baucus
DE - Carper

I believe these people will likely support a Public Option.

Might support a P.O. but won't do it via Reconciliation
WV - Byrd

Byrd has recently stated he won't support using Reconciliation to pass the Healthcare Reform Bill.

Unknown - Maybe
AK - Begich
AR - Pryor
FL - Bill Nelson
LA - Landrieu
MT - Tester
ND - Conrad
NE - Ben Nelson

This group is hard to read. I can see Ben Nelson saying No. As far as the others, I can't see them supporting it or at least using Reconciliation as an excuse to not support it (they'll hide behind Byrd on this).

So, as I see it, there are likely 6 to support a Public Option. It's time to get in touch with these people and it's time for the DNC to pressure the ones we can.

Of course, Reconciliation isn't the only option. There are at least two other parliamentary procedures that can be used to get a simple majority vote. But that's another discussion.

2. 44+6 = 50. We lost Kennedy and as of yet, there can be no replacement until Jan 2010

3. Bill Nelson is mine.
From his website - but note: NOT front & center, I had to look around to find this...

"Our health-care system is broken and needs to be fixed. The president has called for a public option health plan. Like everything else, the devil's in the details. And so far the White House hasn't said specifically what it wants. I haven’t decided among several versions Congress has proposed so far. As a member of the Senate finance committee, my main role will be figuring out how to pay for this."

We (Fl DUers) need to step it up.

15. Me, too, Spartan61.
I feel that we should put our heads together and come up with some organized effort to make him aware of our numbers.

Maybe tonight or tomorrow (I'm literally buried in work today but obviously distracted) we can get something going on the Fl forum.

I feel the same way about an organized national effort. I'm afraid we're once more being drowned out by the vocal minority and that would be our own fault. We can't let this happen again.

He knows how much this meant to Ted. I can't see him voting against the bill in any way it's done.

I would be shocked if Senator Kennedy's death didn't sway his stance on this.

he better get on board. He may be the easiest to turn since he's very ambitious and Indiana is in the middle of all Blue.
