Individuals in the District of Columbia, as well as in six eastern states already had an April 17 filing date prior to this announcement because they are served by an IRS processing facility in Massachusetts, where Patriots Day will be observed on April 16. These individuals are still required to file on April 17.

Oooh "Patriot Day" well we got one too and we don't take an extra day to.. oh just kiss my ASS TAXachussetts!!

5. Patriots Day is a big holiday in Mass...everything is closed.
"Everything" being government offices and schools and such. And that means the Post Office, too. Anyone whose return is processed in Andover MA gets the extra day. Not sure why the whole country gets the extra day. In the past, as I recall, we'd get the extra day, but the rest of the country still had to file by the 15th.

7. Well at least we FINALLY finished paying for the Spanish-American war!!
The phone tax "refund" or whatever they called it is in effect this year. You can declare according to your number of dependents (3 =$50).

The phone tax was initiated to pay for the Spanish-American war (we won) and generally is increased whenever we are "at war". Someone won a lawsuit to declare it and won.

9. As a New York taxpayer I celebrate Massachusetts' holiday
Sometimes you just need that extra day.

Which reminds of a piece of trivia: a letter with the following address was successfully delivered by the post office. Who received it?

WOOD
JOHN
MASS

10. 'Scuse me.
Massachusetts taxpayers aren't as heavily burdened as they used to be. The group said taxpayers here bear the 28th heaviest local and state tax burden as a percentage of income in America, 10.6 percent. The national average is 11 percent.

22. Taxachusetts is damned nice to people on city or federal pensions or military retirees. That income
is tax free, here! The Taxachusetts label is a bit outdated, frankly.

Edited on Mon Apr-16-07 11:02 AM by aikoaiko

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=167195,00.html

My IRS tax instructions say I should file by April 16, 2007. Is this correct?

This is not correct. At the time these instructions were approved for printing, IRS believed it was correct. Thus, any IRS form, instruction or publication that currently shows an “April 16, 2007” due date should now be read as “April 17, 2007.”
