A severe hailstorm hit most of the Yongding District of Zhang Jiajie at 10:30 in the evening on Saturday, April 14. The largest hailstones to fall on the district were up to 10cm in diameter and the storm lasted up to eight hours in some towns. Initial reports says around 272,000 people were affected by the disaster. Direct economic losses hit 220 million yuan or about 28.5 million US dollar. The local government rushed to minimize the extent of the damage in affected areas.
