Talk about a "Push Poll"....GEEZ!
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 01:20 PM by JHB
I just got "polled" by the NRA over the phone. After listening to a brief rant by Wayne LaPierre against some UN anti-gun measure (which he claimed would inevitably be used to put treaty pressure on us, which a congress "filled with anti-gun liberals" would pass, and how we don't want "third world dictators" to tell us what to do with our guns.

After that, switch to some operator for a one poll question:
"Do you think third world dictators and Hillary Clinton should determine what our gun laws are?"
(apologies if I've mis-remembered the exact question, but that is the gist of it and at least 80% word for word)

Bookmark this for when the NRA starts waving an anti-UN poll around soon. No doubt what they claim in the results will be pretty far removed from what they actually asked.

1. My answer
"I'd trust Hillary Clinton and third world dictators far more than the whack job whose rant you just played!"

The NRA has called me and they never get the answers from me that they hope for.

3. Perfect response, just dead-on perfect. I, too, have been push-polled
and frustrate the warm body on the other end every time. They seem to think they can't be played with the rigged questions.

2. I wonder where they get their calling list. I've never been a member but they call me...
I just hang up on them though...my 55 years of owning guns is my business and I'm not interested in their activities...

4. There are several lists of gun owners and 2nd Amendment
supporters available commercially. It's an eminently exploitable demographic. Where do they get the info? What do you buy? To what do you belong? To whom do you donate? Most businesses and organizations are more than happy to sell their customer and membership lists.

There are list brokers who specialize in selling conservative lists, and the 2nd Amendment lists are some of those they sell. They can break it down in just about any way you like, so you can tailor your marketing as specifically as you wish.

If you spend money, join organizations, or donate to causes, your name, address, phone number, and email address are on the lists.

8. OK...whatever you say. That's not really the topic in this thread,
though, is it? I wasn't discussing that at all.

11. Well, guns are related in that we ARE talking about the NRA here, but...
...the main topic of this particular OP is push-polling in general, the shameless, Poseidon Adventure-grade slant to the actual question , and keeping an eye out for what they claim the poll said when they start waiving the results around to pressure politicians.

13. No doubt they are, at least from some states.
Those lists, of active hunters and anglers, can be cross-referenced with the gun lists. Data mining. It's the latest rage. And these push poll folks pay $30 per thousand names to buy the lists to do these push polls.

7. Oh noes--an opportunity wasted
The NRA has been calling and asking for my husband (previously a repug, presently not registered to vote). I thought they were looking for members/a donation--although he has never owned a gun, I figured it was just because of his party affiliation. Heck, if I had known it was a poll I could have had fun with, I would have said they were looking for me! (My husband's name is gender neutral.) :(

10. I was called twice (2 different phone lines) a couple of weeks ago.
When the first person asked the question, I went off on her and asked if she knew what a push poll was. She acted like she didn't know. I suggested Google when she got home from work.

The first time I just said don't call back.

The second time, the NRA guy didn't even get his whole spiel started (and neither one had the opportunity to play LaPierre's rant) when I told him he was going to ask me a question about 3rd world dictators etc. I told him it was a push poll and then told him to put me down as a yes.
