Where is the outrage? Where is the non-stop media coverage?

VA Tech was a random act of violence. The Iraq occupation is a deliberate act of violence.

1. The corporate news media owes its allegiance to ratings b/c it means profits

It exists to enhance shareholder value of the stockholders. That's the primary function. Of course they're going to cover sensationalistic stories like this or Anna Nicole Smith instead of more sober stories like the environment, failing health care, degrading infrastructure, failing public education, the war, etc.

3. I suppose I could point out...

...that our soldiers signed up with the armed forces with the intention and expectation of facing down violence, while the dead Virginia students went to class yesterday without the slightest idea that they would encounter a psychopath with a gun.

4. The silence is just totally amazing.

Don`t know if you remember during the Viet Nam debacle, but the reporting was way different than today`s coverage. Troop deaths were on the news, troop funerals were covered at least locally, the horrors of war were spotlighted for all to see. Today we have this deafening silence. The media seems to think we can`t bother "our beautiful minds" with the unpleasantness of dying and maimed troops. We have "news" stations running 24/7 with very, very little time devoted to the troops. This mess would not have gone on this long if we had some really devoted reporters. IMHO

Out of sight, out of mind?

They volunteered?

(Most) Soldiers are from the lesser social rungs?

Too much American Idol?

Paris Hilton?

Any of these could be answers for why so few seem to care about death in Iraq (or Afghanistan).
