Angelina Jolie's mother dies of breast cancer - AP
Marcheline Bertrand, actress and mother of Angelina Jolie, has died of cancer, her daughter said Sunday.

Bertrand died Saturday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Jolie said in a news release. No age was provided.

Jolie, her older brother, James Haven, and her boyfriend,
Brad Pitt, were at the hospital Saturday, according to the news release.

Bertrand, who had small roles in the movies "Lookin' to Get Out" in 1982 and "The Man Who Loved Women" in 1983, raised Jolie and her brother after divorcing their father, Oscar-winning actor
Jon Voight, when Jolie was a toddler.

4. Because many women die of breast cancer every year.

While this isn't overtly political, Molly Ivins is an example of a progressive women fighting for her life because of breast cancer, today.

:(

5. Ivins, newsworthy
as is the overall issue of breast cancer, the lack of research dollars FOR YEARS directed towards womens' diseases compared to men.

Just don't understand some of the 'focus on celebrities and those associated with the celebrities' focus that makes the person(s) more the focus than the issue.

7. I have rarely watched Jolie's movies
so I am not impressed by that aspect of her life.
However...I AM impressed with the hands-on work she does in Africa as well as what they are undertaking in New Orleans.
In other words...her star status isn't what I enjoy...it's the good she can do BECAUSE of it.

10. I have to agree with that.
Along the lines of the attention Princess Diana got for the issue of land mines. Jolie has done a lot of good giving her own time - and due to the celebrity getting a lot of attention (and undoubtedly getting others to begin to give as well) to very important/worthy causes. Point well taken.

13. I think focusing on some helps focus on the issue.
Jolie is a UN ambassador as well as a celebrity.

14. I am impressed with the way that she
bonds with her mother.

I have read several articles that tell of their mother/daughter love.

May she rest in peace.

Angelina was a wonderful daughter!

U have seem several photos of the two of them.

They remind me of me with my Mom.

6. I can try to answer that one
When my mom died, no news trucks. Just an obit in the paper. People who had no idea who she was didn't care of course. But my friends who knew me from work, but not my mom directly cared. So did the folks on DU.

When we all know someone (an entertainer, star, politician, columnist, etc) it is reported because it is, in a way, a shared experience.

The biggest problem with news today though is it not only reports such stuff but runs with it for endless blathering hours - now in this case it may be a good think as it raises awareness of breast cancer. But overall the news tends to have let us down in that it won't cover in depth the real news that does directly affect lives (at least not very well anyway).

12. points well taken
thanks. I didn't mean to be excessively snarky to the OP. That blathering probably has made me more quick to be dismissive. But in that quick reflex - not focus upon the underlying issues and - as you say, the shared experience.
