Army Wife's Anti-War Signs Draw Fire

By Christi Lowe / WRAL-5

FAYETTEVILLE, NC — An Army wife who is calling for U.S. troops to be brought back from Iraq is engaged in a war on the home front.

Catherine McLin painted an anti-war sign and posted it in her front yard last week after President Bush announced plans to send another 20,000 military personnel to the Middle East. Her husband, Capt. James McLin, is scheduled to deploy with other members of the 82nd Airborne Division in June.

"He comes home daily traumatized over stories he hears — people coming home from the war, how it's tearing families apart," Catherine McLin said. "We've been over there for years. It's time to come home."

Anti-war signs in the middle of a military town quickly gain notoriety, and within hours, the first sign was destroyed.

"We had it staked in the ground with American flags, and they took it out and tore it apart and threw it all over the yard," she said.

McLin escalated her own war, however, and fought back with more replacement signs. The "No War" signs are hand-drawn or spray-painted in red.

2. Deja vu, early 70s. My family has been there to a lesser degree.

Incredibly gutsy woman, this one.

Can any NC DUers suggest how we can support her?

The Paraglide
Fort Bragg’s newspaper
For general information, call (910) 396-6817 or e-mail braggparaglide@conus.us.army.mil.

I don't know how much good it will do to write a LTE to the Paraglide as they censor everything (at least they did when I was stationed at Bragg and wrote for the 'Glide).

9. Didn't know that, thanks.
We used to go to a publisher in Raeford for it. One of the guys in my office, 1st SOCOM, used to do the sports page. Ha! Even the sports was censored. If a Delta team won a big event like the Longstreet Race we used to have to lie about the winner and no names, no photos.

13. Dickson Press - my mother was the editor for the Raeford paper.
She just quit last month.

Dickson lost the account for the Paraglide several years back. Fayetteville Publishing puts the "serious" coverage of Bragg and the military in the Observer, but you can see how they pull their punches often in both papers, because of their situation and the conflict of interest.

16. What a brave young woman. I take heart in the fact that
she felt she could call the local police to help her combat the vandalism.
