These military television ads are unconscionable.

First, the ads are designed to portray the potential recruitee’s backyard as empty and barren, although it’s faded with sepia in the background and not patently obvious... The usual glitz of any ad targeting the young consumption demographic is absent. The tone of the voiceover is a somber baritone.

It asks the parents to "just listen". The kid in question (black, looks about 15, really cute) gazes at the camera with emotive, beseeching eyes at us, the parents standing at the open door, gazing back, listening to him enthusiastically talk about the excitement of being able to join the military.

I happened upon this ad after switching from CNN with a “story” about the kids and parents who go to the recruiting station all painted with a rosy hue.

Robert Gates is looking for lots of recruits. The cabal will turn the propaganda machine on high and aim for the kids.

2. These ads piss me off every time I see them.
I saw one last night and started yelling at the tv. It's like they're berating the parents for not wanting their children to become cannon fodder. I hate recruitment commercials. The ones aimed specifically at kids are horrible too. I seem to remember one from last year that offered a web-based video game.

3. Free hat
I saw a military recruitment ad the other day that promised a free boonie cap, for enlistment I guess. You can't dispute it, that's a great benefit.

4. I take my elderly parents to church on Sunday and
this AM there was an audible gasp in the congregation when it was announced that the 20-year-old son of parishoners was killed in Iraq yesterday. This is an affluent area and most people don't even know anyone in the military, let alone anyone who might become an Iraq statistic.

I think of all the cars in the parking lot with "pro life" stickers and think about how many of those morons voted for the chimp. As far as I'm concerned, they all have that boy's blood on their hands.

As for the military recruiting ads, the ones that I find most revolting are the National Guard ones shown at the movies before the previews. The ads tout the work of the Guard "here at home." Iraq isn't even mentioned. Pure bait and switch.

7. Wait for those bonuses to increase. Then the kid becomes a breadwinner,
saving his/her family who's struggling financially.

They need 92,000 more troops and they're going to do anything to get them, short of a draft.

I'm pissed off, too.
