So the Anna Nicole threads got driven off by the Don Imus threads...
which have now given way to the Virginia Tech massacre story.

Remember Scooter Libby? "Too many Scooter threads..." we howled.

Remember Terri Schiavo? "Too many Terri threads..." we shook our fingers.

Broadcasters know that what people want is the latest CRINGE FACTOR story... and if there are none, they go back to THOSE THAT WORKED BEFORE.

Just as I have predicted. As long as we know that is how "instant" communications work these days.

In peace,

Radio Lady

5. My point? In the view of this former call-in talk show host, it's pretty dreadful to be hostage to
all of the gun control/no gun control arguments all over again. It's the same ping-pong match we had in the 1960s and 1970s -- and many of the same arguments over abortion, capital punishment, gun control, bussing to improve racial balance, etc. etc.

I don't do a call-in radio show anymore and wasn't a part of the cable news phenomenon.

Now, my program (details in my journal) and my topics are chosen for each interesting conversation for 30 minutes). I wouldn't touch the call-in format these days.

Just musing and waiting for terrible escalation on gun control issues to "blow over" as most things do.

See you in the Lounge.

2. This message board simply follows current events
Even if we deplore coverage of them overall, they still grab our attention. It's normal, even if we don't like it.

9. Right you are. As a "mass mind," we turn out for the subjects that
interest us.

Trying to go "against the tide" would be impossible in talk formats and also on an ongoing message board like DU!

3. I agree
it is a tragedy but if you peek into the environmental group a whole lot of the population of the earth is going to be in big trouble or see the news that * won't reveal the locations of secret prisons or or or. There is a whole lot more going on.

10. Yes, this is a particularly "deep" board with lots of nooks and crannies.
However, I use it to just skim the news, unless I am really interested in a subject. That usually lasts for about two days.

No one ever accused me of having too much depth!

6. So most of General Discussion must be hidden.
Sounds like the Ostrich defense.

I guess "hiding" is tantamount to sticking your head in the sand.

Me, I'm just going to another sand box and see what I can dig up.

7. So, just like "get up can change the damn channel", skip the VT threads
Much of the most important news I've seen in weeks has been on here over the past 24 hours.

My only interest in the VT threads is the insistence of the anti-gun lobby that the guns were bought legally and registered.

8. Amount of comments seem appropriate for the worst mass murder in US history
The other events you mention pale in comparison. I grieve for the victims and their families. We're still learning about the wierdness of the killer, so hardly old news.

There's no chance for gun control in the US. The rest of the word thinks we're crazy for having so many guns but I don't think the laws will change. There's actually talk that more guns in Virginia could have helped the students defend themselves. I think this is nonsense but not everyone agrees.

I hold the university administration responsible for the 2 hour delay in informing the students but, so far, they have spun this in their favor, to my amazement.

12. Godai, yours is a very thoughtful post. I agree with you completely on the outcome.
Regrettably, I'd be willing to bet that the Terri Schiavo imbroglio would have the highest thread count on DU, but I would have to do much research on that.

It went on for weeks and weeks...

In peace,

Radio Lady in Oregon

one story at a time, so that's all we get 24/7 till some new outrage comes along. x(

15. Good photo... but what's the thread that tops the VA Tech threads? In the graphic, I can't read it.
I haven't watched Colbert the last couple of nights.
