Once again I am reminded at the sheer AWESOME of the Ignore option
Sorry if this is the wrong place

But if you find yourself getting off the logical, and into the emotional at any point, consider this option.

It will keep good DUers like you from getting TS'd

It really is your friend

So there wouldn't be a plethora of knock-down drag-out out of control fights here. Even if you put people there temporarily to give yourself time get over the urge to rip off someone's head and wiz down their neck. It's the best tool here.

12. EXACTLY - I don't want to get involved in one of those knock down dragouts...
Because in the end - what's the goal?

Convince the other person? Ain't gonna happen.

Convince others? No - people just get sick of that shit...

In the end it doesn't make any sense

Do as Bowie called for and "Move On"...

Especially not those who are angry or abusive. Since I am not a moderator and do not have the power to ban people who are abusive, there's no point at all in engaging in trading insults.

I mean, for those of you who don't use ignore, do you tell people who are abusive that they should eff off, I mean, how is that constructive, or make you a better person? Constant fighting and rough talk is detrimental to the community, which isn't fair to your 'colleagues' here, and isn't all that civilized - I mean, we all know George Carlin's list of banned words, every 5th grader probably knows what they are and what they mean and how to use them - does every 5th grader understand what arguing in a circle is, or begging the question? Or how to identify a tautological argument?

I don't know, maybe my expectations here are too high.

20. I hear you and I understand exactly where you are coming from
But I have to say, that the people on this site that are forever screaming "I'm putting you on ignore!one!" are usually the most ill-informed and embarrassingly stupid people on this site.

One poster in particular, cannot complete a single post without typing the word "fuck" at least five times. And I think that people here would be okay with trying to look past the typos, superfluous profanity, and grammatical errors that blanket this person's posts like a duvet if this person had something even remotely interesting or intelligent to say.

So I've (right or wrong) come to associate the Ignore function with people like this poster and see those who use it as unable to discuss anything and who run screaming like cowards when confronted with their obvious ignorance and stupidity. But I may be rethinking all of this because a few posters have filled this site with so much half-assed idiocy lately that I may be starting to see exactly how the Ignore function is designed to make DU a better place. (Sorry, that was kind of a stream of consciousness post)

Never put anyone on ignore. I think that the people who use it are not here to really discuss, or learn, anything and are very frightened of other people's opinions.

I confess I haven't always lived up to that standard, but using 'ignore' means self-censorship.

24. I tried to use ignore but it drove me crazy...
I am too frigging nosy and when "ignored" would show up in a thread, usually one of the more colorful flamefest threads, I would find myself unable to contain my curiosity and would either take them off ignore, read their post and remember why they were on "ignore" in the first place or log off and lurk on the thread so I could see the "ignored" post. I realized it was too much damn work because my nosiness was greater than my umbrage so I don't use it anymore, lol.

it seemed colorful flamefests and the few I put on "ignore" went together and I found I was missing the full 'flavor' when every second post in the inevitable sub-threads showed "ignored" followed by a hilarious retort from a poster not on my "ignore" list. I NEED to know it ALL, lol.

It's human nature.

Case in point, the woman in the next cube talks either on her desk phone, cell phone, or to little buddies who stop by all freaking day.

seriously all day

I think she works about 20 minutes a day.

(side note: yes I am at work right now and yes I get the irony of my complaining but hey typing on the internet is at least quiet)

ah guess what her phone just rang

My point is, I tune it out like white noise and have no idea what she's saying over there or to whom UNTIL they start whispering.

true story

Hiding threads does the same thing. You are going to disagree with somebody at some point, and it could get heated. Not worth getting high blood pressure or being kicked off a board.

I put 'em on ignore for awhile then unignore them.
