NEW PHILADELPHIA — White House political strategist Karl Rove returned to the Ohio grass roots that helped re-elect President Bush in 2004 and encouraged the GOP faithful Wednesday night to be bold in the face of political challenges.
Rove told about 400 people at a Tuscarawas County Lincoln Day dinner that the 100-day mark of the Democratic-controlled Congress “seems like 100 years, doesn’t it?”

The Ohio Democratic Party belittled Rove’s appearance in this community 20 miles south of Canton and said he was the Lincoln Day dinner keynote speaker despite “his role in nearly every scandal surrounding the Bush White House.”
“Karl Rove is the chief cover-up artist for a president who lied to the American people and misled us into war, and the chief architect of the president’s consistent pattern of putting partisanship ahead of the people,” state Democratic chairman Chris Redfern said.
Redfern challenged Rove to sign an affidavit that he hadn’t hidden information about the U.S. attorney dismissals or directed political involvement in the firings.
Democrats question whether the administration singled out some of those fired to interfere with corruption cases in ways that might help Republicans. No evidence has surfaced to support allegations of wrongdoing, but shifting explanations by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales led to calls for his resignation.
