I know you are saying, "What the hell are you talking about?"
Hear me out.
As I watch this slow mo train wreak that is Sarah Palin I have been infuriated beyond belief. We must be a nation of fools! Curse John McCain for shoving this moron into the national spotlight.
Then I realized that I am looking at this all wrong. John McCain actually did us all a favor. His choice of Palin prematurely vaulted an underground conservative darling onto a stage that was way too big for her.
Let's turn on the way back machine: Remember that Bill Kristol was all over Palin long before 2008. He thought she was the perfect candidate. Indeed, she was a wonderful stealth candidate. She had the huge approval rating and was governor of a state. She was good looking and "folksy". And most of all, she was an unapologetic conservative. Perfect!
But the McCain push was way too soon. What they didn't realize was that she was truly an idiot. Had they waited and schooled her a bit more in national politics, she may still be the Governor of Alaska with a nice approval rating AND some ready answers to the tough questions.
She would have been slowly trotted out as a viable candidate. In 2010 they could have slowly shown her the national stage and she would have received soft ball questions. The media would swoon. She could have potentially made it to 2011 as a contender and won the primaries in 2012. She would be the anti-Obama and the media would love the potential cage match between the liberal and the hot conservative.
But now, we all know she is an idiot. Thank you John McCain for pushing Sarah on us then. We were inoculated from a viable future Palin.
Whew!
