I Guess We Own This Economy
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 08:19 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Even though the current economic situation is the result of forces that took years to develop the Democratic party will be held responsible for fixing it and will be punished if it doesn't.

If unemployment is still south of nine or ten percent the mid terms are going to be a massacre.

I can't believe how fortunate I was to be in college during the Reagan Recession. To me it was an academic exercise.

It seems all my friends are struggling and I see so many shuttered businesses when I drive around Central Florida.

9. There is no easy solution..
... but that's all that Obama has pursued so far. Bailing out the bad actors is a temporary stopgap. Maybe we can punk the Republicans like they punked us by kicking this can until 2012.

4. This is correct
CNN posted an article that say some company took a poll and that the public finds the democratic administration responsible for this recession.

So bush and his goons (the republican majority in congress) ruined this country's economy, with high gasoline and fuel oil, loss of jobs, extreme tax cuts for the wealthy and most of all a war to feed the pockets of heartless people like cheney and now the democrats are taking the blame.

Isn't that like the one "item" at a time mentality of the American People.
But being fueled by Fox and CNN with their 24/7 slurs and lies about the democrats people are being programmed to think like these media liars are telling them to.

5. Sad but True
The American people, as a rule, cannot follow a narrative which is longer than the average soundbite. They may know that Republican policies, in some way, led to the current crisis but they will still blame the party in power for not fixing it. The generation which lived through the Great Depression are not with us in large numbers now to talk about the long haul out of that crisis. And the ones who are know that Obama and the Democrats are not instituting the kind of policies that can start to pull the average person out of the fire.

6. There is a new poll on this question
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/20/whose-recession-is-it-anyway/

Nearly two years into the recession, opinion about which political party is responsible for the severe economic downturn is shifting, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday morning indicates that 38 percent of the public blames Republicans for the country’s current economic problems. That’s down 15 points from May, when 53 percent blamed the GOP. According to the poll 27 percent now blame the Democrats for the recession, up 6 points from May. Twenty-seven percent now say both parties are responsible for the economic mess.

“The bad news for the Democrats is that the number of Americans who hold the GOP exclusively responsible for the recession has been steadily falling by about two to three points per month,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “At that rate, only a handful of voters will blame the economy on the Republicans by the time next year’s midterm elections roll around.”

7. Yes, we own an economy that was seriously tanking when Obama took office
and we took monthly job losses from 660,000 to less than half that (260,000 per month)

and we took a GDP that was tanking at -6.4% per quarter (and accelerating) when Obama took office and turned into a an economy that grew at +3.4 last quarter.

and we took a US stock market that was imploding (DOW ~6500 this spring) and turned it around (DOW now 10,000+)

and stemmed the rate of new foreclosures as well.

Unemployment is always the last economic metric to rebound in a deep recession.

And this one is more fucked-up in all respects than Reagan's.

Oh yeah, Floriduh is a republican state that reaped what it sowed.

just sayin'

15. No - it was JEB and W that sowed those seeds. At least Charlie C had the sense to take Stim$$$
and I seriously doubt that anyone in FL that has survived on food stamps and extended unemployment this last year will vote for a GOP asshole who opposed the Stimulus and extended unemployment benefits.

But in FL, unemployed GOP true-believers just might vote for the GOP assholes that put then in the hole....

That's the Floriduh part...

21. I Can Cite Statistics That The Housing Market Is Continuing To Get Worse
The stock market's rise is puzzling. There's an argument that the action in the stock market is a result of the fact that the real economy is dead and the market is the only place you can make a buck. But the stock market is supposed to be a reflection of the real economy so who knows.

What I do know that if the mid terms were held today the Democrats would lose many seats.

22. New housing starts dropped in Oct due to concerns the home buyer tax credit would not be extended
It got extended, and that part of the housing market will rebound next year.

In Maine, we have experienced three consecutive months of *increases* in home sales - up double digits in some markets from 2008.

Why - because Maine did not participate in the housing bubble that destroyed the economies of (mostly) RED STATES.

Prices on Maine's housing market have also stopped their free fall and have stabilized.

No anti-Dem revolution here - maybe folks in red states should blame the real criminals for the mess they are in - the GOP.

Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 09:52 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I don't see the point of using it as some sort of barometer for the real economy.

Respectfully, if you think this economy is fundamentally sound and prosperity is just around the corner there is nothing I can do to disabuse you of that notion.

Unemployment will still likely be south of ten percent next November. I don't blame President Obama. He inherited this mess. But it is what it is.

I'd like to introduce you to my friends; college educated people, who are in bankruptcy, foreclosure, or hanging on by the skin of their teeth. It's not hard when one of every five Floridians is unemployed, underemployed, or has given up looking for a job.

I thought "Don't Worry, Be Happy" was a relic of the first Bush maladminiostration.

25. I don't think FL is the "real economy"
I think it's a GOP-dominated state that makes bad economic policies and can lay in its own GOP bed.

or

They Dems can take back Tallahassee and make things better.

The GOP is in charge of FL - not the Democrats - and FL's economy is owned by them.

We have the same problem as California. We are highly reliant on tourism and real estate and a constant influx of new residents. All those pillars on which our economy rests are gone. The carnage is unbelievable.

11. Oh yeah - in my state (Maine) unemployment dropped from 8.6% in August to 8.5% in September
and dropped again to 8.2% in October 2009.

Why?

Because Maine has a Democratic governor that rapidly allocated all the Stimulus money he received and put people back to work.

Anyone with eyes can see the results.

Oh yeah - 95% of Maine schools have held H1N1 vaccination clinics and 60% of Maine school kids have been vaccinated - despite the nation-wide shortage of vaccine.

That's how Democrats run things here in Maine.

No Dem massacre on the horizon here.

Maybe FL voters will throw the repugs out in 2010 for fucking everything up.

But I doubt it

Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 09:01 AM by jpak
and NO their seats are not safe - Olympia Snowe is getting the business from the Teabaggers who can't stand her RINO ways and Dems that have had it with her GOP loyalty on things like HCR, tax cuts for billionaires and Iraq.

The bad political consequences of the economy will be Snowe's and Collin's liabilities - not their Dem challengers.

12. If you look back historically, if there is high unemployment
the incumbent gets kicked out.

Let's face it we fought long and hard for Obama because we thought he would bring change. Not little baby steps toward change, not practically invisible moderate change, but BIG, HUGE, GIANT change. Change we can see and point to.

But so far Obama is bringing slight change to the economy. Nothing affects a voter more than high unemployment and underemployment. When we fought for Obama, we thought we would be 1st on the list of people he would help (that and stop the wars). But he seems more interested in bailing out the uber wealthy and the banks/Wall Street/Insurance corporations.

26. I Certainly Don't Blame President Obama.
He doesn't have a magical wand to fix this problem. It's the nature of capitalism.

I don't agree with Karl Marx's prescriptions but his prediction that each boom and bust will be larger than the one that preceded it looks correct.

28. I agree with this post and your O/P
We're just talking about the nature of Americans (& perhaps capitalism as you stated) - especially during that time before we turn the corner in a downturn. This is expected behavior and the mood will turn with the economy. I do object to people who broad-brush anybody who would choose to disagree with your post - I think it's still permitted to have a heated discussion on a political board without the name-calling.
