Traditional public schools in many areas have for several years now turned their discipline over to the police.

Some of the things they have done to little children as young as kindergarten and first grade have been alarming...things such as handcuffing them, arresting them, and taking them to jail.

It has been said that charter schools are the future of education, but now DC has decided that violence occurs in those schools that also get public money. The powers that be in DC have decided these children need equal protection, so they are turning their security over to law enforcement.

District to increase police at charter schools

D.C. officials have decided to give charter schools the same police protection as regular D.C. public schools after a two-month-long spate of violence near a charter school in Northeast Washington. Educators and some officials had complained that the absence of regularly posted police officers at charter schools was putting students at risk. At Friendship Collegiate Academy in Northeast, at least eight students have been assaulted or robbed after class since September, and several large fights have broken out in front of the school. The violence quieted last month, although it didn't disappear, after police increased staffing in the area during dismissal time.

The change, announced last week by Deputy Mayor for Education Victor Reinoso, will take effect next month, and details will be worked out in the next few weeks. The District has roughly 100 school resource officers, who are stationed in D.C. Public Schools according to the greatest need. Those assessments will be extended to charter schools, which enroll 38 percent of the city's public school students.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said last month that the city doesn't have enough police officers to staff every school. It is not clear whether the ranks of school resource officers will be bolstered for the policy change.

Charter-school advocates praised the move.

I find that I am a little surprised that these schools, which are said to be superior to traditional public schools, have violence to the level that police presence is required.

I find myself wondering just how much learning goes on when the schools are being monitored by police.

I taught for over 30 years without seeing police on campus...ever. In the last couple of years before I retired they would come into the classroom at our elementary and arrest small children.

My opinion is that it is a sad day if this new type of school which operates with public taxpayer money, gets millions from the Gates, Broad, and Walmart foundations.....can't prove themselves capable of managing discipline.

3. you do realise that this is DC we are talking about, some areas of the city are a warzone at the

moment with the crews fighting over the business of the city. it dosent matter if a kid attends public or private school if the crews are in their neighbourhoods its gonna spill over into the schools. You try to equate the lack of discipline with the foundations sponsoring the charters, this is not a lack of discipline problem its a full blown gang problem that the city has been experienceing for a long time...

That is my point. They won't do that.

They have police in schools in tiny little Florida towns that are not violent.

especially a lot of the parents from the bad neighbourhoods, the problem is the crews are actively recruiting from the neighbourhoods and it spills into the schools, its is a warzone and no one is overreacting...

I doubt parents there wanted that.

Jeb presented vouchers and charters to the poor and minorities...he told them it was their right to get to go to private schools and not public schools. When presented that way, he made them sound like victims, when they never were victims. He manipulated their perceptions.

who actually sees the recruitment in all the schools not just the bad ones...or the charter or the public ones, you know someone who dosent have an axe to grind about charter schools....

17. i guess you would have to ask the parents who despite the gang issues would still send their kids to

charter schools. though i gotta say that the public schools i see have a lot more issues with gangs than the private ones, mainly the private ones have wanna bees and the public have gonna bees.... so yes they have similar problems but as a parent myself i would never send my kids to public school in DC or any of the burbs around DC, i would rather pay for private or get vouchers..

I can't find an exact figure. They make it hard to find lately. Some of these are private religious schools, and I am being forced to pay to send kids there.

I don't think that is fair.

Why should I be forced to spend my tax money to send kids to private religious schools? Also my tax money sends kids to charter schools, and some in this area teach creationism.

for me simnply i dont care where my tax dollars go whether its vouchers or public or charter schools, as long as its what the parents want and works for the kids, its that simple.... You dont want your tax dollars to send a kid to a private religious school, i would rather my dollars send a kid to that school than force the kid to attend a hellhole of a public school were he is going to drrop out and end up dealing with me for the next twenty years....

if its a hellhole then parents should be able to not have to send their kids and i want my tax dollars to be able to best serve the kids whether thats in their local public school, a charter school or vouchers for a private school, a music school, a religious school.

and won't post another thing about this 'charter' issue here.

I lived in DC for 25+ years, and sent my daughters to private schools, out of necessity. Still paying for that. And I read to little kids in public school 3 years, every week.

it does`t matter if they go to a charter or a public school once they step outside......all the money duncan and his corporate friends are shelling out won`t make these kids any safer until the under lying cause is addressed.

cant see any way the game can be changed in DC as the lifestyle and violence looks to be entrenched..
