3. Post intended only to demonstrate that US defense contractors are

gearing up for a wider war and are hiring the personnel to do so. Also intended to illustrate that apparently the decision to escalate was made some time ago.

Yesterday a well-meaning DUer posted a suggestion that everyone should contact the WH and express disapproval, and that somehow might influence Obama. That person is living in a dream world. The military industrial complex must be served.

7. Thx. Now, I'm as big a critic of the M.I.C. as anyone, but we need to argue about specifics...

...A cheap shot would be to say, "So, you think we should NOT arm and supply our soldiers?".

But I won't.

Basically, it should come as no surprise that more soldiers in action means more arms and supplies.

I hope they are well-equipped, that they get up-armored HUMVEEs unlike what Bush did.

I guess that means jobs, but, you know, the underlying discussion needs to be around the Afganistan/Pakistan strategy, not the jobs that inevitably arise from the strategy.

8. No intention of discussing strategy. Just wish Obama would

direct more effort into improving the job situation here in the US. A shame that people are being called into dangerous duty halfway around the world when we have so many more pressing issues here at home. Imagine all that engineering talent put to work to improve infrastructure. Instead it's headed into the war machine. A goddamn shame.

Domestic job creation, traditionally, has to run US Congressional gauntlets, then state by state roadblocks.

As we are a military nation, and a militaristic society, (largely, not you or I), it just happens that...

A Republican administration can make up a bullshit excuse to start a major war in Iraq and get Democrats in congress to support it!

14. Americans keep buying imported cars so the only jobs left are in the military-industrial complex

US automakers, steel producers and other companies associated with supplying the auto industry used to come to the high schools to recruit new employees right out of high school. I was one of them. Now it is just the military doing the recruiting at the high schools around here.

Most of those jobs have moved overseas where most of our cars are now manufactured.

So whats left for the next generation?

When I see photos of the young men and women killed in Iraq or Afghanistan they remind me of the same recent high school graduates I used to work with at an auto plant in the 70's.
