Wayne Dumond

Anyone who is surprised by the revelation that the Seattle cop killer was sprung from prison by Mike Huckabee needs to remember the name Wayne Dumond.

In 1972, Dumond was charged with murder in Lawton, OK in connection with the death of a man who was beaten with a claw hammer. Dumond testified against his accomplices and avoided prosecution.

In 1973, he was charged with molesting a teenage girl in a shopping center parking lot. He received a deferred sentence and substance abuse counseling.

In 1976, he was charged with rape in DeWitt, Arkansas. Charges were dropped with the proviso that he undergo counseling.

In 1984, he was convicted of raping Ashley Stevens, a third cousin of then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Dumond claimed to have undergone a jailhouse religious conversion, and became a cause celebre among right-wing pseudo-Christians, particularly the batshit Jay Cole, a radio preacher and GOP activist from the Fayetteville, AR area.

Huckabee listened to Cole and co. and pressured the Arkansas parole board to free Dumond. He was released in 1999.

On June 22, 2001, DuMond was arrested and charged with the September 20, 2000, rape and murder of Carol Sue Shields in the Kansas City area. DuMond was convicted in the summer of 2003. Dumond died from cancer while in prison.

Dumond is also suspected to have raped and murdered of pregnant Sara Andrasek.
