1. we've lost the ability to do so many things...

We don't enjoy life anymore, don't know how to have fun anymore, lack imagination and initiative, collectively speaking.

It's not what I remember growing up.

3. I really had very serious hopes from January 20th. and onward that our country...
would do a turn around.... Alas, we seem to be still in the tank and headed further down.

9. Why don't you set up a similar poll, sweetum cakes?
And see how it fares, if mine is not to your desire.

5. Other: We still have the greatest potential
I don't think our current trajectory of the past thirty or forty years can hold much longer. The economy is creaking and groaning at increasing volume due to systemic failures. Given our debt, our refusal to fundamentally reform health care, the imminent Social Security crisis, the untenability of continuing military hegemony, something will give. This administration and Congress are continuing politics as usual, where pressing problems are punted to future generations at an ever more desperate clip.

There will be a breaking point, and then it will be time for something else.

When that comes, we're all going to have an awful lot of say.

7. When the leaders of a major party don't know the difference
between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution AND DON"T CARE TO -

And when large numbers of that party's followers clamor for govt to get out of their lives at the same time they receive public assistance -

When major media personalities openly call for revolt, and face no criticism or censure -

I don't recognize my country anymore or it's citizens.

10. Yep, the same bunch of dipshits I'm used to distancing myself from when traveling abroad...
I guess I'm too much of an idiot to have found that option in the poll though....

11. Is there a middle ground?
I think it is a pretty good country -- wouldn't call it the greatest.

12. I have would have to choose other.
We've done some seriously shitty stuff throughout our history while going through peaks and valleys of greatness and evil so I can't choose not recognize it, because this or something like this has happened before.

As for the "Greatest Nation" selection that would depend on what your definition of greatness is. If you're speaking of destructive capability then my answer would be yes, but if you're talking about greatness as in a nation's long term vision and caring for the least of it's citizens, then certainly not, we place short term profit over the public good and welfare of the American People as a whole.

However I also believe we have historically shown a propensity to regenerate and renew ourselves, so nothing is set in stone, if enough of us take a mind to it, we can recreate our national reality.

Thanks for the thread, arcadian.
