than in Iraq. Iraq still has taken a much higher toll overall: 4367 US deaths.

Not to ask for a flaming, but the original "surge" (or associated position changes) really had an impact on casualty figures in Iraq. I remember watching them decline at the time but they haven't gotten much press recently and I didn't realize what a tiny fraction of the original rate they were at now.

Is there some possibility of transitioning more troops out of Iraq than originally planned?

9. That is surprising. 300 killed in Afghanistan this year, 146 in Iraq.

I knew that violence was down in Iraq and that we've withdrawn from most of the big cities, but hadn't realized the scale of the change. After the Iraq election in 2010 we should be able to withdraw rapidly.
