14. Well, it does put us between a rock and a hard place

On the one hand, I have always been of a rather militant slant when it comes to standing up to policies with which I disagree. I am not one to give a president a pass even if he is of my own party and, infinitely, better than the other choice we had.

On the other hand, I am of the generation which took to the streets and ran a president of our own party out of office due to his escalation of a war. It did not work out well for us in the long run. We got Dick (I have a secret plan to get us out of Viet Nam) Nixon as the result of our efforts. We learned firsthand about the laws of unintended consequences.

Better minds than mine may come up with the answers to this dilemma. My only options, AFAICS, are to continue to write my representatives and the White House and speak out against the futility of this war. Not much help but I see no other choices.

We could primary President Obama but I believe we will see the same results we saw with LBJ, that we will elect a Republican. These days there is not as much difference between the Republicans and the Democrats as I would like but there is enough difference to make the prospect of another Republican president a horror in my mind and a Democrat in the White House a slightly better proposition.

Anyone have a solution?

Good luck with getting it to happen on a large enough scale though.

The way campaigns are set up now, it takes a massive influx of cash and certain powers that be to line up behind a candidate to even make them viable. Change the way campaigns are run and get the money out of politics, and we might have a fighting chance at saving this nation.

Expecting those who benefit from the current campaign system to change the system could be a bit daunting. Of course, public funding of elections is the answer but I'm skeptical we will see incumbents supporting it. We can hope, though.

I think any of us would be floored by someone from the invading country stating it was probably a good decision for their leader because it would help lock in his reelection.

Of course it will help lock in his reelection if the surge works and helps to stabilize Afghanistan and make it better. Why would a leader purposely make a bad decision that he thinks won't work?
