According to Fleischer, a press secretary leads a dangerous existence, drawing a balance between what the press needs to know and what is better left unsaid. "I'm paid to walk a tightrope. And if you do this business long enough, you just develop a gut, a judgment about what information you leave behind in a closed room," he says.

And he tries to keep himself out of the news. Stories about a press secretary often indicate trouble.

Fleischer caused more unrest in a press conference following the Sep. 11 bombings, responding to talk show host Bill Maher's criticism of American bombing campaigns in Afghanistan. "Americans," Fleischer warned, "need to watch what they do and watch what they say". This remark brought him scathing criticism and also landed him in an online political parody.
