Haven Humane has a surfeit of exotic birds for adoption (Redding, California)

Usually home to animals that bark and meow, Haven Humane Society in Redding has its hands full this week with a glut of two-legged pets that can whistle, talk and make washing machine noises.

Most of them arrived Tuesday when a Redding man brought in 15 birds, including such exotic varieties as macaws, sun conures and lorikeets, hoping the shelter could find homes for them.

The new birds joined 14 already being housed at the shelter, said Redding Animal Control Capt. Lee Anne Smith. The birds go up for adoption today.

"Usually we have a few birds a year. A lot of it has been because of the economy," Smith said, explaining that people are often forced to give up pets because they can't afford to care for them.

The man who brought the birds in Tuesday could no longer care for them because of illness, she said.

I notified the avian rescue I work with (mickaboo.org) and we're looking into offering some help placing the birds.

2. If the birds are healthy, there should be no problem adopting them

out. Given the high cost of most exotic birds, they should have eager folks wanting to adopt.

3. I love birds, but after owning two parakeets,

I will never have another bird. Talk about messy. Birdseed everywhere. But I am sure that people will line up to adopt those birds.
