"Honey, I'm tired and it's time for me to go.. I just wanted to talk to you one more time"
Edited on Thu Dec-03-09 04:19 PM by SoCalDem
My friend's mother called her yesterday to talk to her, and then she passed peacefully at 93 years of age, 3 hours later.

She was found in her nightgown, clinging to rafters in her attic after Katrina.. She also survived the "other" New Orleans flood. She lost a husband in Guadalcanal, and a 2nd one in Korea.

She raised 7 kids alone (5 of them completed collge)

She had a mastectomy in 1980-something, and a 2nd one a few years later, but she died of "just bein' plumb worn out" (her words)

Her father was born into slavery, and she did not graduate high school.

I was lucky enough to meet this woman when my friend moved her here after her house was swept away. She was here for a few months, but had to move back.. she missed home. She lived with a grandson & his wife, and still active until a few weeks ago..

My friend said she was just ready to go..and even joked about if there really was a heaven, would she be allowed to have both husbands back :)

RIP, EffieMae, you have earned the rest..

2. My dear SoCalDem...
Ah, what a beautiful story!

She sure as hell earned her rest...

What a spirit she had!

I'd say she has both husbands back, and they're glad to have her back too...

Safe passage to her...

I just wanted to talk to you one more time"

8. She was about 5 ft tall and thin as a rail, but she was the Queen Bee
and the last one of her siblings to pass. I think she was the last of about 12 kids..

12. I just said a prayer for EffieMae and her family. Thank you, that touched me.
And if EffieMae was an atheist: I apologize to EffieMae and her family, for my presumption. She lived her life in a way that I hope, one day, to have the courage to emulate. Om Mani Padme Hum. Rough Satori.

22. She lived a long & mostly happy life.
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 12:11 AM by SoCalDem
My friend & her husband were just down there for Thanksgiving & she said her Mom was failing, so it was not unexpected..especially at her age. She had taken a fall a few weeks before Thanksgiving, and was mostly immobile, and of course her vision was poor, so her quality of life had taken a downturn, and she was just ready to go..

Most of the family was there, so she had her final goodbyes with everyone who mattered to her. Most of the family still lives in Louisiana & a few in Texas, so most came out..knowing that her time would be soon:)

26. My Mom too, back in May, almost 92. She was just tired and worn out
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 03:26 AM by DainBramaged
the body was failing, the brain was not. She lived alone until she had to be put into hospice in March. All she wanted to do was be with my Dad again, who died 25 years ago in 1984.
