1. In all fairness, wasn't this a stunt similar to "Burma Shave?"

Cars whizzing by on that highway will see the "S" before the "A," then see the "L" before the "E," so they would see "S-A-L-E"

It would be like presenting Dorothy Parker's famous assessment of martinis:

3. In all fairness I've seen that ad stunt many times at many dealerships.

They do that for the drivers on that side of the street so you don't see the E then the L then the A, then the S.

4. It would work if the spacing was a lot more than 20 or 30 feet.

But since the view is such that all the letters would be seen in one glance. It wouldn't work as well.

And besides those Burma Shave signs had words not letters.
