Afghanistan is the rock on which the former USSR fell, and broke into pieces
we would be wise to remember that.

2. Yes, WE financed and organized it
It would be wise to remember that, all the way around. The USSR argument is stupid.

The blowback from Reagan's proxy wars, all over the damn world otoh, is something we should talk about a lot more often.

5. why is the USSR argument stupid, exactly?
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 09:56 AM by Lerkfish
I"m curious.

I edited to add:

the same terrain and cultural remoteness and power feudalism that made Afghan a loser for USSR will remain a problem, regardless of the fact that the US was using Osama to fight in Afghanistan back in the day.

so I'm not sure why this is a stupid argument.

6. We supplied the Afghans with the hammer and training on how to use it to help break the USSR
Without our help, as well as numerous other countries, do you really believe a bunch of in-bred hillbillies could have defeated the Soviet army? No way, no how.

Let's stop our mythical hero worship of a bunch of in-bred hillbillies who were getting crushed by the Soviets before massive international assistance arrived, as well as Pakistani special forces and their air force's role in the conflict.

8. They seem to be doing well against our non-hillbilly forces
have you ever looked at a topological map of afghanistan?

the terrain favors "hillbillies" vs. conventional forces.

Just like the Vietnam jungles favored the indigent forces vs. the invading force.
