Man who left water for immigrants faces prison

(12-04) 17:42 PST Tucson, Ariz. (AP) --

A judge has threatened to sentence an Arizona man to 25 days in prison for leaving jugs of water in the desert for illegal immigrants.
05.09

A federal jury in June convicted Walt Staton of Tucson of littering in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. In August, a judge ordered Staton to pick up trash for 300 hours and also sentenced him to a year of unsupervised probation and banned him from the refuge for a year.

Staton is a member of the group No More Deaths, which supports humanitarian aid along the border. He was scheduled to be re-sentenced Friday after he told a U.S. magistrate last month that he objected to the court's punishment on moral and legal grounds.

But Magistrate Jennifer Guerin denied Staton's motion to modify or suspend his sentence pending appeal and threatened to double his community service hours to 600 hours or give him 25 days in prison.

1. Wouldn't it be nice
if we could sentence the judge to a 100 mile walk in the desert near the border next June (before the Monsoons).

4. What monsoons? It rained one time last summer in Yuma. Think they have become a thing of the past.
Of course, there is no such thing as global warming!

22. True that.
We barely got anything over here by Benson.

And we have a lot of what used to be Mexican flora and fauna now.

with jobs is who they need to be going after, not the people who came nor this person who tried to help to make sure some didn't die of thirst. I guess the thinking is the more hardship there is getting here the cheaper they'll work. Its all about the money after all you know. Other than for money the ones doing the hiring would be killing them in the streets like some will just kill a snake for being there. No good snake except a dead snake, we've all heard it, same thing here, no good Mexicans except the ones who will allow themselves to be slaves. Its all about the money. Lets help the south American countries inprove the peoples lives there so they can live like humans in todays world should be able to not have to live hand to mouth, cold and wet, scared and with no future. Damn I'd love to be able to visit my neighbors to the south without them wanting to do me harm because of all the shit Americans have done to them for eons now.

6. Wait for it...
wait for it... they'll be here any minute to say let the Mexicans dehydrate and die and send the man to prison. I know there will be at least some of them.

Compassion is not dead, but our government's willingness to recognize it as a virtue is.

8. I hope so too.
It's a shame we cannot have compassion for human life without going to prison for it nowadays, isn't it?

24. Really?
You've actually read where DUers claim to "let the Mexicans dehydrate and die?" Really? 'Cause in all the years I've been on this board I've never actually seen that.

Now, I've seen where people take issue with unfettered illegal immigration but I've never seen any post that purported to "let the Mexicans dehydrate and die." These are complex issues and making irrational and unsubstantiated claims certainly has no place in the debate.

12. This is about as ridiculous as we can get.
Racist rednecks can form militias and go beat up people that are trying to cross the border for the sheer hell of it without fear of getting arrested, but try to keep people from dying of dehydration and go to prison. Beautiful.

13. Actually his crime is littering in a pristine wildlife refuge.
Edited on Sat Dec-05-09 08:43 AM by HamdenRice
That's why his community service sentence was picking up trash. His crime wasn't helping illegal immigrants with water; it was littering.

Isn't there someway to leave water in a biodegradable fashion? Maybe a big tub of water that is itself made out of ice, and that would melt away?

Somehow I'm not thrilled about people leaving plastic jugs in a wild life refuge.

18. Rephrased: Why do you support the slaughter of baby arctic seals for their fur???
I guess the first time it went over your head, so:

DU logic:

If you say X, then you must support completely unrelated terrible thing Y.

For example:

If you think water should be left for migrants in a way that does not litter the pristine wildlife refuge with plastic bottles, then you must want that wildlife refuge to be littered with human corpses.

This is exactly as logical as saying:

If you want water to be left for migrants in non-biodegradable plastic jugs then you support the slaughter of baby arctic seals for their fur.

So, I ask you once again, using your own logic, why do you support the slaughter of baby arctic seals for their fur???

20. And you really think
they went after him with this much prosecution for a fucking littering charge? Really? Well I am not thrilled by magistrates abusing their power to make political statements. I am not thrilled by fucking people dying in motherfucking USA land for lack of compassion. I am not thrilled by the weight put upon some goddamn plastic jugs vs. human life. And least of all i am not thrilled by you.

19. Littering supersedes life and liberty. Sounds stupid to me.
Oh, he does need to pick up the empty jugs. If he's not doing that, then we have a problem. Keeping him out of the preserve won't let him pick them up.
