9. I read an article about Mr Tebow in the Drs. waiting room last week
It was from a 6 month old Sports Illustrated and it dealt almost entirely with his "faith" and his work in the the faith based Fla prison system. By the time I finished the article I was convinced that I never wanted to hear or read anything about him ever again. In fact if he was to be raptured up to be with Jeebus tomorrow I don't think I'd give a fuck.

He impressed me as a shallow arrogant prick, ready to bombard everybody he meets with all of his Jeebus bullshit. And he comes by his assholism genetically. His father is a big time bible thumper evangelist who was working amongst the little brown people in the Philipines when little Timmy was sent to him from Gawd,

He can believe whatever the fuck he wants. I don't want to know about it.

Oh well it'll just be that much funnier when he getss caught with a hooker. Or soliciting a plainclothes cop in a park restroom.

10. The circumcisions did it for me.
"During spring break, Tebow added a new facet to his fame. In an impoverished village outside General Santos City in the Philippines, Tebow helped circumcise impoverished children."

Apparently it was on the job training at that.

57. That may be but brainwashing desperately poor people before
they get much needed medical care is not.

"Families lined up for hours waiting for the mobile-care units, and the people took numbers, like customers at a deli, to designate who would be seen first.

"It was a pretty amazing sight," Young said. "People wanted to get care so much they were fighting to get on the bus. They all thought their number should be next."

The locals started by hearing a brief Christian sermon from one of the Tebows and then moved to a brief medical exam from a Filipino doctor. The patients had their blood pressure taken, heart beat checked, and any available medical history reviewed."

Captive audience.

"The Philippines, a country comprised of over 7,100 islands, has historically been an area of abuse and conquest. Of the 86 million Filipinos, we estimate that over 65 million have never once heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Currently, there are 41,949 barangays (villages), and 26,675 (64%) of them have no evangelical church of any kind. In recent years, there has been a tremendous movement of the Holy Spirit in the Philippines, resulting in an unusual spiritual responsiveness, and many Filipinos would believe in Jesus if they were just given the opportunity.

Jesus tells us in John 4:35b, “Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest!” For over 23 years, BTEA has focused on the incredible harvest of souls that are being reaped within the Philippines; but like any harvest, it is certain to be ripe only for a season. The rapid growth of materialism threatens the future responsiveness to the Gospel. If we do not act now, while the Spirit is moving, this great harvest of souls could be lost forever. We feel an intense sense of urgency to get the Gospel to every individual in the Philippines before this great door of opportunity closes.

Our PLAN is to preach the Gospel in every village in the Philippines in the next few years. The task is great, but God specializes and delights in doing the impossible! We intend to increase our staff of national evangelists to 60. By dividing the country into theaters of operation, with each evangelist assigned to a specific area, and working extremely hard, we intend to preach the Gospel in every village. The plan includes providing theological training and guidance to help national pastors to conduct the best possible follow-up.

http://www.btea.org/theplan.asp

Sleazy.

I read the marines offer medical care and circumcisions. They fortunately don't require folks to listen to some baloney sermon about god saving them. There is something so despicable about coercing poor people into listening to a fundy sermon as a prerequisite to medical care.

86. Should medical care only be offerend if one believes in the religious preference
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 01:24 PM by Kerrytravelers
of those delivering the medical care? That is what this organization is essentially doing. They don't force people to convert, but the pressure is very clear. If this group provided medical care, and then offered to share their religious beliefs to those interested, I'd have no problem.

My dad was in the military. He and my mother were stationed in the Philippines for approximately five years. My parents did all kinds of volunteer work, on their own time, out of military uniform, for local people who were poor. And although my parents are religious, they never required anyone to hear a sermon prior to helping them. Sometimes people would ask if they were Christians, and they would say yes. But they never required people to go to church to receive assistance.

I take it from your username that you are a medic. I'm sure you don't require people to listen to a sermon prior to receiving medical treatment.

For me, personally, this has always been my issue with missionaries. If you want to show people God's love, show it to them by the way you treat them. Your living example speaks more than forced church attendance any day.

92. When my parents did any volunteer work, it wasn't with a church.
They would gather clothing and take it to the poor themselves. They would take the old beat up pieces of scrap metal to the people and help them build homes. This wasn't a church organized event, but just something my dad, a few buddies and their wives would do on and off.

And the people made them thank-you gifts, which my parents still have to this day.

When I said people would ask them if they were Christian, it wasn't because they were quoting scripture while helping out, it was just a question that they answered, and then moved on with the task at hand.

Your parents are not the type of people I an referring to. The type of religious cultists that would map out an entire country for religious conquest and hold out the offer of medical care for a price as a tool to that end are the people I am referring to.

96. Oh, no, I didn't misunderstand you. No worries. I just wanted to be clear to anyone reading.
And I totally get you on the mapping out and conquering plan. I share your feelings on this. I find it so disrespectful when people use religion and faith as a carrot to receive basic human needs, and feel it is their right to force their religion and their faith on others, with complete disregard for the faith and culture of others. Doing good works is one thing, manipulation is another.

109. I never said they denied medical care.
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 03:57 PM by Kerrytravelers
You said above that from a public health care pov, they are doing a good thing. And yes, they are. My issue is with the sermon that must accompany the health care. If they would like to offer church service to interested people after the care is provided, fine. But before hand seems manipulative to desperate people in need of medical services.

FMD, a conversation could be interesting, but I must request that you not insert words into my post that weren't there. I didn't say anyone was denied health care, nor did I imply that to be the case. If you felt that I may be implying such a thing, just ask me if this is what I meant and I will happily clear up my thoughts/wording/opinions. I need not prove what I did not say. It would make for a much more interesting conversation if we were to hear your personal thoughts on this missionary group in the Philippines rather than just implying what I did not write.

Michigan had a kicker once who wore a wrist band that said "Jesus" on it. I say once, because many people complained to the AD (my sister among them) and it did not occur again.

75. Nobody Hates Religious Bullshit More Than Me, But the Jackass Has a Right To Wear What He Wants.
The school is not endorsing Jeebus. If they were, then ALL the players would be wearing scriptured eye black, at the insistence of the school. Tim Tebow is a singular, self-deluded moron who is perfectly free to express his refuting of rational thought all he wants.

Besides, when he cries after losing, as he did yesterday, it runs like mascara in the most hilarious way.

sorry, that's the whole point. Even when I was 7 and was a Brownie, I understood that when you wore a uniform, you didn't embellish it with non-Brownie things. Of course, not having gone to public school till now, Tebow no doubt lacks understanding of these things.

123. I Wouldn't Classify Eye Black As Part of the Uniform.
It's not mandatory to wear it. It's like if you were in your Brownie uniform and wore a charm bracelet. The bracelet's not part of your uniform just because you're wearing it WITH the uniform.

More importantly, Tebow didn't originate the idea of using eye black for personal statements. Other players, pro and college, have had things printed in their eye black, both religious and secular. Given this precendent, it would be unfair to single out Tebow and tell him he can't wear his silly numbers under his eyes.

31. Hadn't noticed, really...
If there is, it can't be all that obvious or in-yer-face. Well except for when someone makes a touchdown or something and kneels in the endzone or crosses himself or whatever. But even then it's not like this constant presence that I find so obnoxious like someone wearing references to bible verses on his face.

I just wonder what the Christians would do if, for example, any Muslim NFL players ran around advertising their religion on their persons during games...they'd probably find it exceedingly offensive...

The Above subject line is the subject line of a post I posted last weeks inquiring how much the State of Florida pays to have this walking scripture billboard at their games.

I say that as long as he is out there representing a state University, that he should not be promoting religion. If he wants to play in the NFL he can paint Jesus F*** Christ on his ass, but it is out of line while he is at Fla. I realize that it is a moot point as this is his last game for them, but Jesus Christ!

28. Goofy fucks "Christianifying" football -
I hate goofy fucks like Tebow. He not only cannot separate church and state, he cannot separate church and football - or church and reality.
We are constantly bombarded with this religious cult fanaticism yet - if anybody would disagree with them or embraces another belief, all hell would break loose.
Surely Tebow should take this as a sign from his deity of great disapproval...

30. I wonder how he feels about verses from the Quran.
An interesting social experiment would be for one of his opponents to wear a Quran reference under his eyes. Would Tebow be taken aback? Would he be offended, or would he realize how ridiculous he looks? Would it be a teachable moment?

Piety is supposed to be kept behind closed doors. That's what it says in the Bible.

that's the way I see it.

I'd find it just as obnoxious if, for example, someone proud of being a member of Mensa were to run around with his GENIUS IQ written on his face or wherever else he chose to advertise it.

I really hate it when people feel they have to let the entire world know they're a "this" or "that" instead of being quiet about it and letting us discover on our own.

I like discovering stuff about people that they're humble enough to keep to themselves until they're asked.

83. I don't understand this, either.
If someone finds solace or inspiration from religion, then why should anyone else care?

I also understand the work of missionaries, but I don't agree that the whole world needs to be converted. Missionaries and "Bible-thumpers" think it's their divine obligation and commandment to convert the world, which is a dangerous mission. They take very seriously the passage, "no one comes to the Father except through me" — John 14.6, and set about trying to "save the world."

There a rather enlightened take on this here:

http://web.me.com/frsparky/iWeb/028g08.htm

So let him have his under-eyes darkened however he sees fit. What is it to us?

When the fundies take over, it will be with the support of liberal Christians.

I know, you don't think some militant group of religious fanatics can gain power over the majority. But they won't quit until they do. The other Christians support them by nullifying their only real enemy, clear critical thinking.

I really don't care what Tebow does. I don't follow college ball. (I think it's ridiculous that people go to college to play ball, but that's another thread.) But anyone who treats his faith as something positive, is spreading a dangerous prejudice.

148. I don't see people doing it, but it is reasonable.
Faith is the capacity to believe something for which there is no evidence, or even negative evidence. If "reasonable" has anything to do with "reason," which is the opposite of faith, then it's dangerous.

Cigarette smoking also feels good. :smoke: But it's dangerous.

If he wants to tattoo the entire Bible on it why should anybody care (so long as he's not pushing messages that promote/incite harm or violence)? Sure, he looks like an idiot but it's his body and he can do what he wants with it. 132. Not in the NFL he can't
They forbid his kind of bodily displays in their rules of conduct. It's no different than one's private employer not allowing an employee to harrass co-workers by pushing religion on them. That being said, Tebow has no interest in letting others have their religious freedom. His father runs an evangelical operation that endorses all kinds of religious bigotry. Tebow is the ministry's heir.

No one is suppressing his rights. No one is saying he can't be a christian. His beliefs are unchanged regardless of what is or is not plastered under his crying eyes. But potential employers like the NFL *are* saying he can't deny others their freedom FROM religion.

101. When so-called Christians stop using their faith to oppress others,
who believe differently than they, I will stop being critical of their hypocrisy.

And if other Christians sit by silently and do nothing while others of their belief preach prejudice and hatred, they are just as guilty.

Funny how not too many of the so-called main-stream churches call out the likes of, oh, say, the God Hates Fags 'church'.

Oh, once in a while some minister or priest will pooh-pooh them to the media, but I'm willing to bet they secretly agree with their agenda against homosexuals.

as long as it's not being professed in an "in yer face" type of way.

That is, why can't people keep their beliefs to themselves unless and until they're asked?

I've heard that Tebow was using God and religion to "inspire" the players. I think that goes beyond the right to have, or profess, a belief. It would be the same thing if, for example a manager at work used God and religion in staff meetings to motivate the employees. Unless it's a church setting, it's inappropriate.

Same thing with football...

The more a person feels the need to make a display of how faithful he or she is, the chances of that person being a hypocrite rise accordingly.

Perhaps I'm misjudging the guy, but in my experience people like that tend to be insufferable.

Ten dollars says that if his signage said "Praise Allah", "Hail Satan", or "Atheist", it wouldn't have made it out the locker room. Personally I think that religious displays don't have a place in football.

And as an LSU alumnus, it made me feel a little dirty rooting for Alabama.

126. Face paint is besides the point. Tebow's a total dick.
As evidenced by the previous week's UF v. FSU game wherein there's an injured FSU player on the ground and Tebow runs out to bless the poor leper with his glorious presence.

134. You should check out Bob Tebow's website
His dad runs quite the hatefest. Ol' Timmeh is his dad's heir.

We're just giving him back what he so freely gives others.

142. Here you go
You have to read between the lines. When you consider that 80% or so of Filipino citizens are Catholic, and Bob cites the staggering percentage who "have never heard the gospel of Jeebus", then you get the idea.

144. You're into punishing the sons for the "sins" of the father.
Got it. Nice progressive value. I'll mark it down.

Oh, and that other progressive value, return what one views as hate with even more hate. That'll foster a spirit of peace and love among people.

146. The son SUBSCRIBES to the father's views 100%
I am not transferring the father's hate and ignorance onto the son. It's already there. When I said "heir", I meant that in every sense of the term, not just in a financial or legal sense. Fuck the sanctimonious pile of smug, ignorant shit streaming out of your piehole. I am a progressive who knows hate is a good weapon, and I like using it on the deserving.

I have to laugh at priggish little snot-nosed twits like you who sit on their precious hilltop and decree who does or does not possess "progressive values". You obviously fail at seeking serenity, because you're too busy pompously judging other progressives for not adhering to standards you damn well know cannot be met in the real world. "Peace and love" is moronic hippie sophistry. Doesn't work when up against scumbags like Tebow.

Or Dr. King.

153. Gandhi was a hypocrite and a misogynist
A woman-hating pederast to boot. I gag every time I see a DUer with his avatar. I figure "Forgive them, for they know not what they do."

To demonstrate:

From Richard Shenkman's Legends, Lies, and Myths of World History:

Gandhi, for starters, had some very strange beliefs. When he was older, he preached that a couple should have sex only three of four times in their lives - although he engaged in a lot of sex when he was younger. He liked to sleep in the nude with naked young women to test his vow of chastity - apparently, sleeping nude with his wife wasn't much of a test. History doesn't record what she thought of this, but I can imagine my wife having a few choice words to say about such a situation.

Speaking of his wife, she died when he refused to allow her to get life saving shot of penicillin after she contracted pneumonia. He was, you see, opposed to modern medicine. But not fanatically opposed, since after her death he allowed himself to be treated with quinine for his malaria and allowed his appendix to be removed by surgeons. Nice guy, huh?

There's a lot more, like the fact that he wasn't always the pacifist that he has been made out to be and his odd fascination for bowel movements - I'll spare you the details of that last one.

Ibid, and culled from The Gandhi Nobody Knows by Richard Grenier:

Gandhi the part-time pacifist:

Although Gandhi became famous for his pacifism, his beliefs here evolved considerably over the years. In fact, until the British massacred hundreds of peaceful Indians at Amritsar, Gandhi was such a faithful British subject that he served in the imperial army.

In the Boer War, Gandhi led the Natal Indian Ambulance Corps and, in one of those weird coincidences, was one of the three future world leaders at the Battle of Spioenkop, along with Winston Churchill and Louis Botha. For his good work, Gandhi eventually won the War Medal and was promoted to sergeant major.

Gandhi also volunteered to serve in World War I, one of the few Indian activists to support England unconditionally. A bad case of pleurisy prevented him from serving, and in fact forced him to leave England and return to India.

Gandhi and World War II:

Gandhi never quite seemed to realize that the non-violence he urged against the British would have failed horribly if applied to the Nazis. He urged the British to surrender, and suggested that the Czechs and even the Jews would have been better off committing heroic mass suicide.

Even as late as June 1946, when the extent of the Holocaust had emerged, Gandhi told biographer Louis Fisher: "The Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher's knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs." (Let me add: :puke: )

As the Japanese advanced into Burma (now called Myanmar), there was a real possibility of an Axis invasion of India. Gandhi thought it was best to let the Japanese take as much of India as they wanted, and that the best way to resist would be to "make them feel unwanted."

(In fact, the Axis was helping a buddy of Gandhi's to raise an army of Indians that would have seized the country from the Brits, but that's another story.)

Gandhi, family man:

He described his wife as looking like a "meek cow." (Again: :puke: )

He refused to allow his sons to get a formal education, and also tried to force his oddball sexual ideas on them. He so disapproved of the wife of his eldest son that the Mahatma disowned him. This son broke from the family and became an alcoholic. In rebellion against everything his father stood for, Harilal Gandhi even announced at one point that he had converted to Islam.

The Mahatma also had trouble with his second son, Manilal, who had an affair with a married woman. Dad made the matter a public scandal and pushed the woman involved to shave her head. Manilal was also briefly exiled from the family for lending money to fellow black sheep Harilal.

--------

My conscience is clear too. It isn't unclear because someone with your authoritarian definition of "progressive" says so.

As for the Reverend King - well, I am faithful to my wife, and I don't even claim to be a "Man of God", so score one for my morality over his.
