Hans Blix On Bush/Blair: " They were, he says, 'like witch-hunters of the 17th century' "
'Bush and Blair misled the public... yes, it's conceivable both could end up on trial'
So why hasn't UN weapons expert Hans Blix been called to give evidence at the Chilcot Inquiry?

...........................

As a Swedish diplomat, Hans Blix is a man who chooses his words very carefully and very sparingly. But as he searches for the right way to describe the behaviour of Tony Blair and George Bush, as they prepared to wage war on Iraq, there is no mistaking the depth of feeling behind his analogy.

They were, he says, 'like witch-hunters of the 17th century' - men who were so desperately seeking to justify the invasion on the grounds that Saddam Hussein had stockpiled weapons of mass destruction, that they were deaf to reason and blind to logic.

'They were convinced they had their witch (Saddam) in front of them, and they searched for the evidence and believed it without critical examination'.

The result, says the former UN weapons inspector, was that Blair and Bush 'misled themselves, and then misled the public

1. Yes, well there's a reason they were like that

Both men are late life converts. They NEED to believe improbable things.

11. And be wary of that one -
Torquemada was not exactly a protestant reformist.

17. They were part of the Truth that Jesus Lived & Died, hence they are He.
And that was one of the things that Jesus was trying to show us. This is who we are; this is what we do and he refused to participate, so it got him too.

25. That is profoundly... humanly relevant.
Religion has always been about the human condition and its possibilities... ie. politics.

In Islam this is explicit; in Christianity, recently, perhaps less so; but it is still so. Of Judaism I feel too ignorant to express an informed opinion.

19. Bull crap. (No offense)
They may have tried hard to give the appearance their 'religion' was a driving factor in the decimation of Iraq aka Cradle of Civilization, the only religion these two know is empire and resources. I have more religion in my little fingernail than these two assholes will ever know.

20. I didn't say they did it for their religion
Their religious conversions late in life say a lot about how these two men cope with DOUBT. Or rather how they cannot live with doubt. It also says something about how both the men can make themselves believe in things they wish to believe are true.

21. Whether they're using religion to cope with doubt or not isn't
what I was commenting on, and I meant no offense. Sorry, I have a good friend not going to live thru the next weak and am full to the eyeballs of kneejerk posts these days. What I meant to convey is that whether they're trying to convince themselves by these 'conversions' or anyone else, it's still bull crap on their part. I got so sick of hearing 'Islomafascists' or whatever word it was they made up to demonize one religion while touting they're own it convinced me personally they have no care about the religion most who believe do. Religion used to kill is just as extreme as any terrorist using it anywhere. That's all. Sorry, really didn't mean to offend.

4. They were the wrong men to have power........
And it was the wrong time for them to be in power. They believed their own lies, and the lies became accepted wisdom. It's actually a rather frightening example of group-think.

5. Why do people still use the term "misled"?
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 11:01 AM by Altoid_Cyclist
They flat out lied and killed a lot of innocent people with their LIES.

The result, says the former UN weapons inspector, was that Blair and Bush 'misled themselves, and then misled the public.

Misled just sounds too innocuous for murdering so many people.

Oops! PDJ beat me to it. (LIE)

6. Isn't it sad? The UK is going after Blair, yet he was only a tag-along and Bush is making speeches?
Blair was yet another kool aid drinker - it was the Bush administration that was 'fixing' the evidence to support the war.

Our system is broken, starting with the fact that there wasn't a full (REAL) investigation of the lies, and Bush / Cheney weren't impeached then tried for treason.

9. 45 minutes
Blair was one of the cooks in charge when it came to mixing up the kool-aid. No one ever challenged his stupid "45 minutes speech" which was transparent enough for a small child to see through.

23. Seems, David Kelly may have warned Blair privately
before going semi-public on the complete lack after exhaustive inspections of any credible evidence for WMD in Iraq, and on the official UK-US policy of lies.

Yes, we certainly have enough evidence to put Blair on trial. And the UK is signatory to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

14. What is going to come of this new media rash of recycled information?
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 11:50 AM by chill_wind
It's starting to feel like stuff stuck between the pages of Parade magazine, casually read and then tossed aside with the rest of the Sunday sports and fashion pages.

Who is left, 7 years later, that didn't know what this cabal did and is suddenly enlightened and outraged?

Where is the will in our own government and our own society to act? I say it exists less and less everyday now. No time for these men, now. We would rather go do more GOOD war.

Little bit of trivia, an ancestor was mine was one of those witches killed. My mother was one of the founding members of the order of the Decedents of Salem Witches.

18. Blix attributes more sincerity to Blair and Bush than I would. They never acted as if they were
seriously looking for WMDs: they essentially chased Blix's inspectors out of the country to launch their war; they refused to protect suspect sites from looting; they promptly abandoned control of the borders; in short, their acts were all carefully calculated to provide excuses for them when no WMDs were found

24. Yes. It was always all about Blair's alibi, the (failed) Security Council
machinations also. As testified by witnesses.

Bush, of course, felt he didn't need any such (cooked-up) legal cover.
