Authorities launch investigation after dog turns up with skull in its mouth

San Bernardino County sheriff's investigators began searching a 10-acre property in Landers today for human remains after a family dog came home with a skull in its mouth.

“Over the past couple of weeks the dogs were bringing in bones and this time one brought in a skull,” said Cindy Beavers, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

The skull may have been on the property for one or two years, she said, but the other bones were not human. The age of the skull has not been determined.

The owner of the Mitch Lane property reported the finding Wednesday.

Homicide investigators, Morongo Basin Search & Rescue, volunteers and cadaver dogs are scouring the site for additional evidence, Beavers said.
