PETA protests against circus elephants

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals gathered outside of Belvedere Elementary School for a protest Friday morning.

PETA protested the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus that is coming to the South Florida Fairgrounds later this month.

Members of the group promised to hand out activity books to children that show how circuses treat elephants.

The school board has asked PETA to move the demonstration so it does not affect students.

I think it's admirable that they are protesting Ringling Brothers, but outside of a school???

1. First time I have agreed with PETA in awhile

As for why the school, circuses give huge lots of tickets to local school districts. Perhaps PETA is discouraging the school from going to the circus.

6. I have hated circuses all my life

I am a life long animal lover and rescuer, I understand completely how shameful circuses can be, HOWEVER handing out (what I am sure are) activity books to children that are probably full of disturbing images is cowardly and wrong. IF they want to stand outside the circus or the ticket office and hand out things to adults that is fine but children should not be involved.

Many of the circus elephants were taken from their slaughtered parents and clan. They do not forget and they are forever traumatized. We can learn a few things from them and stop using them as kiddie entertainment.
