No one told the base that Obama is losing the base (results of PPP Poll)
overall Obama has a 53% approval rating.

Our new poll suggests that liberal unhappiness with Barack Obama is still largely anecdotal and not very widespread. His approval rating with liberal Democrats is 95%, with only 3% disapproving of him.
On health care 88% of voters in that group say they're with Obama and only 7% are opposed. There is a little more unrest with him on Afghanistan. 68% of liberal Democrats support his approach there with 22% opposed. Even with those who disagree with him on the issue 81% express approval of his overall job performance so it doesn't seem to be a deal breaker by any means.

Certainly media outlets can go out and find some individuals on the left disenchanted with Obama if they want to push a Democratic disunity narrative but it's hard to make much more than an anecdotal case on that front. For the most part liberal Democrats are pretty content with Obama

Accding to this poll where Obama has real problem is with senior voters--only a 34% approval rating (and they do turn out to vote, so he needs to work on that)and southerners only 24% approval in South which is bringing down his overall numbers.

DU is mainly left wing, yes, but not necessarily democratic. There are many Greens, Socialist, etc here.

they just can't put up posts in support of candidates who are running against Democrats.

So what I'm saying is that this group is not typical of average voting Democrats, in part because it comprises other progressives, too.

Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 06:34 PM by NJmaverick
for example one self confessed liberal was found to be a closet racist just yesterday and was banned. So not everyone claiming to be a liberal has proven to be a liberal.

I have no reason to believe you are not a liberal, but it's not hard to believe that there may be other racists or even paid operatives of the GOP posing as liberals here at DU.

128. The latest polls show 88% of all liberals support Obama
yet the unrecs around here show that it's completely the opposite at DU. That means either we have a serious problem with sock puppets, the anti-Obama crowd has driven off most of the sensible Obama supporting liberals or not everyone claiming to be a liberal here is one (unless this place is one hell of an incredible statistical anomaly).

IANAL so I really can't speak to the specifics, that's why I'm a card carrying member of the ACLU, they have a track record of standing up even for the unpopular and against the popular.

My personal opinion is that there are a great many people on DU who think that it is fine that Obama's Justice Department is taking the position they are who would be outraged if it was GW Bush's JD that was doing exactly the same thing.

Me, I'm sticking with the ACLU.

19. If Obama is so pro-Wall Street why did he support this?
http://my.earthlink.net/article/top?guid=20091211/7e150dcd-3ba8-4b89-bda8-70bee5f19016

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed the most ambitious restructuring of federal financial regulations since the New Deal on Friday, aiming to head off any replay of last year's Wall Street failures that plunged the nation deep into recession.

The sprawling legislation would give the government new powers to break up companies that threaten the economy, create a new agency to oversee consumer banking transactions and shine a light into shadow financial markets that have escaped the oversight of regulators.

The vote was a party-line 223-202. No Republicans voted for the bill; 27 Democrats voted against it.

While a victory for the administration, the legislation dilutes some of President Barack Obama's recommendations, carving out exceptions to some of its toughest provision. The burden now shifts to the Senate, which is not expected to act on its version of a regulatory overhaul until early next year.

(Let's face it most of you who carp about Obama on DU are not democrats and are not the base of the party).

Because besides Kucinich and a handful few others,

In fact, this place spend most of his time trashing Democrats
than Republicans.

Skinner should be thinking of giving this site another name,

active, I do not believe they make up anything like the majority of this site. In fact, I think they may be about 15% of those who come here. And that's all. They're just so adamant about their beliefs that many posters avoid posting so they won't be attacked by that group.

Others don't seem to mind and post what they believe, even when it annoys the minority.

The most votes went to "People who always voted for Democratic candidates."

Progressives got way fewer votes. The 3% are not, and cannot be the base of the Democratic party. They are a tiny minority, when they are even Democrats in the first place.

101. I don't know, actually. I tend to take issues one at a time.
And then, I look at them in terms of what is possible and what is not. Sometimes it's an issue of timing, with other things taking the forefront for a time. Here's the deal. I've learned not to expect that everything I want will happen at the time I want it to happen. I wanted it to be possible for a black man to be elected to the Presidency in 1964 when I was in Selma. I was disappointed that it didn't happen.

I wanted the Vietnam war to be over in 1965. It wasn't. I wanted Al Gore to be President in 2000.

I want a lot of things. My preference would be for them to happen as soon as I want them to. That is rarely the case. So, I keep wanting them. Eventually, if we all want them, they happen, at least to some degree.

This is not a dictatorship. No President can say, "Let it be so," and have it be so. Right now we have some real morons in the Senate who call themselves Democrats. We need to be rid of them. How will we do that, do you suppose. Until we do, it cannot "be so." So, 2010 is coming. 2012 is coming. Recriminations over what we cannot change are worthless. Working for the next round is not worthless.

You may do as you please. I will do as I think best. We will see who succeeds.

Negativity does not succeed very often. I suggest a change in attitude if you truly want to implement the things you say you want. Otherwise, please stand out of the way while others work to make the changes needed. If you obstruct, even with the best of intentions, you obstruct.

and the bulk of responses in this thread, it does, which ought to speak volumes about the role of the left in this country, which is basically to say "you guys are fucking things up", be reviled for it; then to come back later to say "we told you that was getting fucked up", and then get reviled for that.

I tried the links but it gave no numbers. From the links I found, you would just have to take the pollster's words for their interpretation of whatever questions they asked an of whom they asked them.

How did they identify "liberals"? I can spin numbers too. No body called me. But I'm a little more interested in policy and performance. But if numbers make you happy, go ahead and play with them.

Some people think anyone to the right of Rush Limbaugh is a liberal.

Back during my college teaching days, I found a book in the library that listed Jeane Kirkpatrick and Max Kampelman as "card-carrying Communists." The author was a member of the John Birch Society.

148. Simple-minded.
That kind of "screening question" would make the poll immediately invalid. There is no check or double to verify the position. There are those who call themselves Christian but are bigots. There are those who call themselves patriots but favor positions that negate the Bill of Rights. Without a definition of terms, the concept is bogus. Besides liberal, the poll doesn't identify whether the person being polled voted for Obama. It doesn't specify how it determined who they would call his "base".

It makes a flashy headline, but it is shit as a barometer.

112. Gallup reports something a bit diferent. States Obama's support amongst Democrats has only dropped
amongst white Democrats. His approval rating among black, Asian, Native American and Hispanic Dems has remained fairly consistent.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/124484/Obama-Approval-Slide-Finds-Whites-Down-39.aspx

Money Quote: And though he maintains widespread loyalty among Democrats, the small loss in support he has seen from his fellow partisans seems to be exclusively from white Democrats. It is important to note that this pattern is not unique to Obama. For example, Bill Clinton averaged 55% job approval during his presidency, including 52% among whites but a much higher 76% among nonwhites and 82% among blacks.

Interesting, eh? :)

141. All I basically said was "mistletoe is a good thing" but whoever is alerting like mad
decided to alert on that one too. Whatever. I've said my peace and feel pretty damn good about it too.

138. Now wait just a damned minute.
If you don't want to read Bluebear's responses, then USE IGNORE. There's no reason for this kind of hateful personal-attack crap. WTF?

144. Because I have eyes?
And I can read? I'm sorry, do *I* need your royal permission to post too???

If you think every post Bluebear makes is stupid/pointless/idiotic/what-the-hell-ever, then use the Ignore function. That's what it's for.

something isn't kosher. Perhaps a serious epidemic of sock puppets, are pushing the rec/unrec thing

143. Me thinks Repukes are saying their Dems on these surveys cause they like the real Obama now
that he's shown he leans more right than left. That makes one of us - I sure don't.
