Small victory against a neo-nazi yesterday.
Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 07:50 PM by Ian David
In an online game I play, some dude was using the screen name 88(name)88.

(I've deleted the middle part in case he googles himself and finds me to seek revenge).

I sent an email to the game company, along with links explaining how "88" is used as a neo-nazi slogan meaning "Heil Hitler."

I also asked, "If you change his screen name for him, may I suggest that you please change it to 'Shalom18?' Thanks!"

And guess what?

They did!

Some neo-nazi dude is now stuck with the name Shalom18.

Hah!

Happy Chanukah, fucker!

7. H is the eighth letter of the alphabet, so 88=HH, or Heil Hitler
It also references the dual purpose 88mm antiaircraft/artillery guns, one of the most feared weapons of the German Wehrmacht during WW2.

12. 18 is the Hebrew letter-to-number thingy for "life"
Since Hebrew uses the same characters for letters and numbers, the letters in the word "chai", when used as numbers, add up to the number 18. So 18 is considered an important, significant number in Judaism since it corresponds to the word for life. That's why Jews tend to make donations to Jewish charities in amounts that are multiples of 18 (like 36, or 180 etc.)

So it's a serious burn for that Nazi fellow :)

31. Notice that I did not judge the actual OP
I merely explained why neo-nazis use 88. For all I know, the OP's interlocutor COULD HAVE been a Dale Earnhardt fan. I made no claim on that point either way.

35. Oh I know.. and sorry if you thought the rolling eyes were for you..
.. they were for the OP. I know full well what ALL of the neo-nazi signs and symbols are... trust me on that.

I question the OP because he never stated that this person said/posted anything that led him to believe he was a neo-nazi.. just that his name contained the "88"s...

Peace,

Ghost

36. I agree
I found the OP's claim dubious if it was just a matter of the user name.

41. Usually the number 14 is also used with the 88...
14 signifies the "14 words of the Brotherhood" (Aryan Brotherhood), coined by David Lane.

There are any number of possibilities/reasons for someone having "88" by their name: year of birth, year of graduation, year of marriage, it was their football jersey number, or the number of their favorite player... or the Dale Jr. thingie. It's impossible to establish with the little/no context in the OP.

Peace,

Ghost

11. Here
As a Neo-Nazi symbol
Eighty-eight is used as code among Neo-Nazis to identify each other.<2> H is the 8th letter of the alphabet, so 88 is taken to stand for HH which in turn means Heil Hitler.<3> For example, the number is used in the song "88 rock'n'roll band" by the neo-Nazi group Landser. The late convicted Order terrorist David Lane wrote "Fourteen Words" and 88 Precepts, and the numbers are often found in combination (1488, 14/88, etc.). This form of the number has inspired the naming of the groups Column 88, Unit 88, and White Legion 88.

Racist Skinhead Glossary
Common terms of the movement
14/88: Common white supremacist code. 14 stands for the "14 words" slogan coined by David Lane, who is serving a 190-year sentence for his part in the assassination of a Jewish talk show host: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." 88 means "Heil Hitler," as H is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

Sometimes a bit of schadenfreude is appropriate and good for the soul.

I might have suggested Shalom4:20 - peace and smoke pot. ;)

25. I used to make that assumption about anyone with the numbers 88 in their online usernames.
But...someone born in 1988 would now be 21, and a lot of people use the year of their birth as part of online names (and may not be aware of the other connotations).

I'm reporting him now, and trying to figure out what I should suggest they change THIS guy's name to a name that professes his love for MLK, Jr.

29. LOL Reminds me of the highway they renamed in MO
A KKK group adopted it and had a sign put up with their name on it. So a state rep proposed naming that stretch of highway after a Jewish activist.

I see a number of profiles that make you initially think they are a nazi because of the "88", but then you find out that they were just born in 1988 after looking through the stuff they put on there.
